Toledo Voters Approve
Sewage Disposal Plant '
Toledo, Ore. (U.PJ Toledo,
voters have approved a $126,
000 bond issue for a new sew
age disposal plant that would
end pollution of Yaquina bay
on the Oregon coast.
Toledo had been told by the
State Sanitary Authority to stop
dumping sewage into the bay
where it is damaging commer
cial oyster plantings.

morning on Wednesday) I hap
pened to glance out of the win
dow. What I saw REVOLTED
me. It didn't last much more
than five minutes, but while it
was going on it would have pass

to catch my eye:

and had to be WRITTEN IN by
his admirers and supporters, has
98.616!
Taft has 21,534 write-ins.
ON THE Democratic side, NO
presidential candidate names
were printed, so the Democratic
voters in Minnesota also had to
resort to write-ins to show their
preferences.
Kefauver has 17,489 as this
is written.
TRUMAN has 3,121!

charged with the murder of her
three-year-old daughter.

Mrs. Olive E. Shurly, 71-year-old
grandmother of the accused

that he has no intention of re
signing as chairman of the State
Republican Central Committee
because he has accepted a post
with the Eisenhower-for-Presi-dent
campaign.
"It is perfectly clear In my
mind that I can handle both
jobs," the Seattle financier said.
"I made it plain to the Eisen
hower people that I have re
sponsibilities i n Washington
state and that I intend to fulfill
them. ,
"The time that I will give to
Eisenhower will be taken from
the time that I would have spent
on my personal business. My
own private affairs will have to

Portland Police Look
For Explosion Source
Portland (U.R) Portland
police said Saturday they still
have found no explanation for
an explosion or flash fire which
seriously burned a Portland man
in his home Friday.
The victim has been identified
as George E. Maxwell, 26, Port
land. He is in Emmanuel hospi
tal for treatment of burns to his
head and chest and face lacera
tions. Officers said there was "some
kind of explosion" but that their
first theory that Maxwell may
have been trying to find a leak
near a gas stove has been dis
proved. , .
The Portland Gas and Coke
company, which services the
house where Maxwell lives, al
so had no explanation for the
blast.'

Extension Is Planned

be started within two weeks on
construction of the Bonneville
Power Administration's 115,000
volt Cardwell-Cowlitz transmis
sion line, it was announced here
Saturday.
Thomas E. Black, Lower Col
umbia district manager for BPA,
said the line will connect Pacific
Power and Light company's
Yale dam project wit the Long
view high voltage grid.
Contract for the Cowlitz river
crossing, one mile southeast of
Longview, Wash., was awarded
to Lee Hoffman, Portland con
tractor, On a bid of $56,243. The
crossing is the first step in con
struction of the eight-mile line.

Salaries for Nurses
Portland (U.R) The Oregon
State Nurses Association and the
Oregon Association of Hospitals
were in agreement Saturday
over a $20-a-month pay boost
for more than 500 Oregon nurses.
The two organizations said an
agreement has been reached
which will raise the scale for
professional general duty nurses
from $220 a month to $240.
