Bonneville

appropriations subcommittee has
approved fiscal 1953 construc
tion fund requests for the Bonne
ville Power Administration and
the Columbia Basin project with
only minor reductions. Rep.
Henry M. Jackson, D.-Wash.,
said late Thursday. c
Jackson said less than- $500,
000 was cut from a $20,000,000
request for the Columbia Basin
project, and $3,763,000 was
trimmed from the $70,283,000
request for the Bonneville Pow
er distributing agency.
Confirmation Expected
The subcommittee actions are
expected to be confirmed by the
full Appropriations Committee
Friday.
The subcommittee denied funds
asked both by Bonneville and
the Reclamation Bureau for an
intertie between the Bonneville
and California Central Valley
power system, Jackson said.
"The subcommittee felt that
In view of the serious implica
tions of tying together these two
systems a complete study should
be made," he said.
La Grande Lin Omitted
Also eliminated from the
Bonneville request . was a $1,
173,000 item for a 230-kilovolt
line from La Grande fo Baker
in Oregon, Jackson said. But
a $2,000,000 item was added for
a line from McNary dam to the
Pascc-Kennewick-Richard area.

Projects
The line is planned to serve
increasing power demands at the
Hanford atomic works, he said.
The allocation for the Colum
bia Basin project is designed to
allow the Bureau of Reclamation
to construct facilities to bring
irrigation water in 1953 to some
63,000 acres of land near Grand
Coulee dam, Jackson said. About
67,000 acres go under irrigation
this year.
The subcommittee also ap
proved without change a $930,
000 request for construction of
Satus unit No. 3 of the Wapato
reclamation project near Yaki
ma. Wash., Jackson said.
He said Bonneville construc
tion program for Washington
alone amounts to about $40,
000,000. Jackson said allocations
for transmission lines and other
facilities include:

Kitsap line. $3,584,000; Chief

shield, who, while fishing at
Wedyort, Nova Scotia, in 1948,
caught a tuna weighing 882
pounds! Mrs. Crowinshield her
self weighs around 114 pounds!
Mrs. Farrington has written a
most interesting book, but
whether women should be en
couraged to take up fishing is
open to question. I believe most
husbands would rather go on
fishing trips attended by men
only. Besides, married people
shouldn't be together all the time.

As one who has several times
been the victim of a slipping rug
she has my sympathy. I once
slipped on a rug while carrying
a tray of cocktails at a party.
Physically I wasnt' injured. But

that occasion caused me much
mental suffering. Anyway, all
rugs should have "rug anchors"
to prevent slipping. Keep that in

Adm. Joy To Become
Naval Academy Head
Washington U.R) The Navy
announced that Vice Adm.
Charles Turner Joy, commander
of naval forces in the Far East
and chief United Nations nego
tiator in the Korean truce talks,
will become superintendent of
the U. S. Naval Academy this
summer.
A spokesman said Joy's suc
cessor for the Far East command
has not been selected yet. Joy
wiu succeed Vice Adm. Harry
B. Hill who has reached the
statutory retirement age of 62.
Olympia U.R) Beer sales in
Washington state during Febru
ary this year totaled some
11,000 barrels more than in the

a Medford visitor yesterday. He
met with a group of Jackson
county Democratic leaders.
He said the Democratic slate
in Oregon is meeting with "en
couraging reactions' upstate.
Two political commentators,
both of Republican leanings,
have said the Democratic slate is
the best the party has offered the
voters in many years, Thornton
said, - and he gave the opinion
that the Democrats have a good
chance of capturing at least two
of the three major state offices

Fish Commission To
Study Falls Effect

gon Fish Commission said Fri
day it is conducting an experi
ment with 100,000 marked fin
gcrling salmon to determine the
effect of the Oregon City falls
and generators in the power sta
tion on the migration of young
fish. .
One half of these fish are
marked to be released above the
falls and the other half for lib
eration below the falls. By com
parison of the number of ma
ture fish caught with the respec
tive markings, the effect of the
fulls and generators will be de

Grants Pass boy who was seri
ously burned in May, 1951, when
a five-gallon oil can exploded,
was pictured in Thursday's Ore
gonian. He now is a patient at
the Portland Doernbecher Memo
rial Hospital for Children, and he
was shown in bed receiving Red
Cross whole blood administered
by his attending physician' and
a nurse. Since being at the hos
pital he has received skin grafts
and other treatment as well as
a large amount of Red Cross
blood.
