DO TELL

Tjtc f-u7pntv.fi v cent nam-'
phlet published by The Public
&fprK Committee deals with a
private affair,
to:wit, Having
a Baby. With a
copy of the
pamphlet came
a statement be
ginning, brave
ly enough:
"The good
old days,
when the
role of an
expectant
father was limited to pacing
the hospital floor to await the
glad tidings, are gone. Only in
cartoons . . . does he get off
that easy."
But, simmer down, folks. The
ladies and gentlemen of the Pub
lic Affairs Committee, are only
kidding. They do mention the
husband once on p. 8, but that's
all. He can go right back to his
pacing so far as the Committee
may be concerned.
Again on p. 26 cheer up,
there are only 30 pages in the
pamphlet the Committee men
tions Rooming In with great
daring, in view of the fact that
rooming-in is pretty modern
practice for you gullible cus
tomers who think having a baby
is a public affair and hence you
should go to the hospital for it.
A husband would look silly pac
ing the living room floor,
wouldn't he?
A husband Iooks silly pacing
any floor when his own baby is
being born. If he has a grain of
manhood in him he will be with
his wife to hold her hand and
strengthen her morale and to
share with her the most wonder
ful experience of life a miracle
that makes marriage sacred.
This namby-pamby pamphlet
of the Public Affairs Committee
with its cute illustrations and
smug assumption that of course
the event will occur in a hospital
would probably have escaped my
notice had not the statement that
came along with it aroused my
curiosity about the information
or advice given in the pamphlet
In the pamphlet the expectant
mother is told that the most im
portant thing is to "be yourself
and enjoy yourself. Remember
that you are doing what comes
naturally."
Does it come naturally to the
expectant mother to go to a hos
pital and be sequestered, while
her husband submits to confine
ment in the monkey cage with
the rest of the so-and-so's?
Here I'd like to repeat an as
sertion I have made many times
and invite any one who can con
trovert it to do so; Home is the
safest place to have a baby al
ways provided you have a home
fit to live in. - -
kindly, "We don't do it that way
in our home" or "The children
aren't used to having things done
this way."
Lesser of Two Evils
Your mother-in-law may ob
ject to your interference and she
may even accuse you of having
"new-fangled ideas" about how
to bring up children. But, in the
long run, you will find this the
lesser of two evils.
A spoiled child takes up more
of your time and energy and in
terferes more with the peace and
harmony of the home than the
temporary upsets that may come
when you try to interfere and
put a stop to your mother-in-law's
spoiling of your children.
