Older Drivers Blamed
For Most Accidents
Chicago (U.E) Inexperi
enced drivers are far safer than
those who've been at it a long
time, a Chicago Park District
survey shows.
Drivers with less than a year's
experience were responsible for
only 28, or about 1 of the
2,424 traffic accidens in the Chi
cago area in one month, the
survey revealed. Drivers with
between 10 and 30 years experi
ence were the cause of 1,077
or about 44 of the accidents.

Tony Curtis, whose real name
is Bernard Schwartz, was born
in a Hell's Kitchen tenement.

named Paul Schwartz no kin
took a hand. Paul received Tony
in what was called the Jones

take the chips off the shoulders
of the very young.
He showed Tony the error of

Tony learned fast. He decided
to quit the streets and complete
his education. He went to high
school, but World War . H inter
rupted that. -.,
After serving aboard a sub
marine and getting himself hurt
pretty bad, he came back to
finish his education. He fin
ished high school and decided to
take advantage of the GI Bill
of Rights. He enrolled in what
was known as the Dramatic
Workhouse. . ". "
He did fairly well there, and
in other ventures, including a
role with the Cherry Lane play
ers in Greenwich Village. -A fel
low named Robert Goldstein
saw him at the Cherry Lane one
day. Goldstein is a Universal
International eastern talent
scout.

tion by fisheries interests has
blocked construction.

Big Biitte Pipeline
A three-page story, with pic
tures and maps, on the recently
completed second line of Med
ford's Big Butte springs water
supply, appears in the March is
sue of Western Construction
magazine. The story was written
by City Superintendent Robert
Duff and Assistant -Water Super
intendent Robert L. Lee.
The article explains that since
1940 the population served by
the Medford water system has
risen from 13,000 to 23,000. The
peak amourtt of water needed to
supply this population has in
creased from 7,000,000 gallons
a day to 12,500,000 gallons a day,
it states.
Mora Growth Expected
Growth studies conducted in
1948 showed that within the next
50 years Medford's population
could be expected to reach 50,
000, at which time the water de
mand would be 24 million gal
lons a day, according to the ar
ticle. Designs for the increased
Medford water supply were
based on these future needs, it
says.
The article tells the history of
the pipeline following approval
of a $2,800,000 bond issue in
May, 1950. In general, it deals
with the technical aspects of con
struction of the line.

Methodist Minister
Assists in Mission
The Rev. Meredith Groves,
pastor of the First Methodist
church here, returned this week
from Salem, where he assistpH
in a United Evangelistic mission
at the Jason Lee Methodist
church.
The mission is part of a move
ment in which all Methodist
churches in Oregon, Washington
and Idaho are takine nart. Mr-
Groves instructed laymen who
are calling on people in their
communitv. and was euest
preacher during Sunday services
ana eacn evening last week.
The work in the Pacific north
west is part of a nationwide
movement'sponsored by the
Methodist church. Bishop Gerald

mission, and the Rev. O. J.

ed, 2,693 church laymen visited
15,550 members of their own
communities throughout the
