Seaman Says
Him to Bridge
Seattle (U.R) A young Cana
dian seaman has charged his
captain chained him to the
bridge of the freighter Clyde
L. Seavey for 67 days on a voy
age half way around the world.
William M. Olynyk, 27, of
New Westminster, B. C., asked
$100,000 damages from the Isth
mian Steamship company be
cause of the chaining and be
cause "I was made the object of
ridicule and curiosity at ports
the ship visited."
Said Insubordinate
Attorneys for the steamship
company said Olynyk was dis
ciplined because he was "insub
ordinate and mutinous. The
company accused Olynyk of
kicking Capt. Sydney E. Wil
liams in the groin during an
argument while the ship was at
Batavia, Java.
Olynyk said when the ship
docked at Houston, Tex., he was
tried and found innocent of as
saulting the captain.

he said, they are supposed to

Rescue Party Sets Out
To Reach Stranded Dogs
Darrington, Wash. (U.R) A
rescue party set out Wednesday
in an effort to reach three starv
ing dogs stranded without food
and harrassed by eagles for 13
days on a 4,000-foot-high ledge
on craggy Whitehorse mountain.
The dogs were marooned
when they chased a cougar up a
cliff on the snowy peak 30 miles
southeast of this tiny Cascade
mountain settlement.

Rogue River Asks
Volunteer Work
On New Fire Hall
Rogue River Remodeling of
the old Odd Fellows building
into a fire hall is to begin March
20, according to an " announce
ment by Second Assistant Doug
las Buckle, in an appeal for
laborers to aid with the work.
Buckle states in an open letter
addressed to the people of Rogue
River and the Rural Fire Dis
trict:
"As most of you know the
volunteer Fire Department with
cooperation of the City Council
and Rural Board of Directors,
has started the purchase of the
I.O.O.F. building on Broadway
in Rogue River.- A lot of remod
eling is necessary before the hall
can be occupied by the fire
trucks.
New Doors Needed
"The whole front of the north
half of the building must be torn
out and rebuilt with overhead
doors, the sidewalk must be re
moved and rebuilt with a heavier
base and sloping ramp. The
wooden floor must also be torn
out and filled with gravel for
eventual concreting. These steps
are absolutely necessary before
occupancy, and are a bare mini
mum. "We are now in a position to
start work on this project but
must have some help from you.

that will come later when our
dance season is nearer. But we
are asking for some volunteer
help. A few hours work will be
a community boost. We hope to
start work on this 10b March 20.

Youthful Portlanders
Held in Auto Thefts
Seattle (U.R) Sheriff's offi
cers were holding two Portland,
Ore., teen-agers Thursday after
they confessed stealing five cars
from Portland, Seattle and Ever
ett, Wash.
The boys, 14 and 17 years old,
told Sheriff Harlan S. Callahan
they burned the last one, a con
vertible, because it broke down
They said they skipped school
in Portland Friday, stole a car
and drove to Seattle. They
abandoned that vehicle, stole an
other and drove to Everett,
Wash., where they stole two
more cars.
Then, they said, they drove
back to Seattle, hacksawed a
trailer loose from the convertible
and drove the car until its
brakes failed and its motor over
heated.
Disgusted, they set the car
buretor on fire. Sheriff's depu
ties arrested them two blocks
away.

Former Engineer Asks Immediate
End To North Africa Contract
Washington U.R) The for
mer top engineer for a construc
tion combine building Air Force
bases in North Africa has recom
mended that the contract be "cut
off tomorrow and not let go
another day."
John W. Leahy, Bronxville,
N. Y., told the Senate prepared
ness subcommittee that "we're
just throwing money away" on
the Moroccoan bases.
Leahy was acting chief en
gineer from March 7. 1951, until
Aug. 3, 1951, for Atlas Construc
tors, the contracting combine
building the North African air
bases. The program is expected
to cost about $455,000,000.
Montr Said Wailed
Leahy said money spent on
the bases is wasted and that
the nature of the contract cost

"I frankly feel that it should
be cut off tomorrow and not
let go another day," he said.
Leahy, who has been in the
construction business 23 years,
complained of "unorthodox," un
heard of, and "helter-skelter
buying" policies in North Africa.
He testified that in some in
stances engineers' purchase spe
cifications were rewritten by
procurement officers and even
by Miss Bernice Ringold "the
girl at the control desk." His
engineers were kept busy writing
"change orders" to get purchases
back on the correct items.

hearing opened that the base
program is "a sordid mess." He
McKay Joins in Honors

McKay has joined members of
the Portland Chamber of Com
merce in honoring Brig. Gen.
Orville E. Walsh, Portland dis
trict Army engineer here for
four years.
Gen Walsh is slated to take
command of military construc
tion projects in North Africa and
parts of Middle East later this
month.
Gov. McKay, speaking at a
dinner held in Walsh's honor,
said that work on the Willam
ette valley project to provide
flood control, power and other
public benefits, reached a new
peak of development under the
administration of Gen. Walsh.

attempt this summer to scale
mighty King peak, highest tin
conquered mountain on the
continent, Pete Schoening, lead

challenge to the world's best and
most experienced climbers, juts
from the extreme southwest cor
ner of Canada's Yukon terri
tory. It lies next to towering Mount
Logan, a 19,850-foot peak which
has allowed only three expedi
