munity club held a business ses
sion March 11 with Mrs. A. C.
Reusser, vice-president, conduct
ing the meeting. Ralph Mobly,
president, flew to Baltimore,
Md., several days ago to attend
the funeral of liis step-father.
Clinton Hopper was asked to
elect two adult couples to serve
with him as chaperones at each
meeting of the youth club. :
It was announced that sewing
and painting groups will hold a
joint meeting Tuesday, March 18,
t 7:30 p.m. A piano and sewing
machine have been purchased
and installed.
A short musical program was
given. Irish ballads were sung
by the group, led by Mrs. Roscoe
Talbott with Mrs. Ralph Reed at
the piano.
Mrs. Mobly played several ac
cordion numbers and Albert
Gandt, introduced as a "talented
and versatile pianist,' 'enter
tained with a lively medley of
American folk tunes which
amused his audience, since he
was in reality operating the me
chanical player attachment.
Refreshments were served by
Mrs. Don Kerby and Mrs. Virgil
Neuenschwander.

Many activities are planned by
Pythian Sisters during the Visit
of Mrs. Vera Sharp, grand
chief; this week. A potluck din
ner will be held at 6:30 p. m.
Tuesday with the regular meet
ing following. A sight-seeing
drive is set for Wednesday aft
ernoon, with Mrs. Sharp being a
guest for dinner at the home of
Mrs. Ronald Miller, most excel
lent chief, that evening. She will
also be a special guest at .the
regular meeting of Past Chiefs'
club and while here will visit
in Ashland with Mrs. Mabel
Roberts, a past grand chief .for
Oregon.
. Past Chiefs' club will meet
Wednesday at 8 p. m. at the home
of .Mrs. Harry Bryant, 1312
Reddy avenue.
Those attending are asked to
take either sandwiches or cook

thian Sisters Friday evening
when Grand Chief Vera Sharp
made her official visit at that
city. Mrs. Harry Bryant, grand
guard, was formally introduced
and presented a corsage.

were Mrs. Bryant, Mrs. W. L.
Walden, Mrs. Don Anderson,
Mrs. Margaret Davis, Mrs. Mary
Schuler and Mrs. George Bryant.

Civic Drama Guild
Presents Comedy
To-Close Series
Although not . recommended
for a Boy Scout conclave or a
district meeting of women's
dubs, "The Voice of the Turtle."
the third Civic Drama guild play,
presented at the high school audi
torium, proved to be an enter
taining, though slightly risque,
voice.
The play, while falling into
the category of comedy, was not
a "Deuy-iaugn piay out nts
more readily into .the snicker
classification and seemed to be
particularly amusing to the ex
servicemen in the audience. '
"Voice of the Turtle" starred
Phyllis Manning as a lush blonde
with whom nature has been ex
ceedingly bountiful in every de
partment except the "upper
story. The success of the play
hinged upon the effectiveness
with which Miss Manning con
vinced the audience of the au
thenticity of her role as a
struggling young actress recov
ering from two love affairs but
who still has dew in her eyes,
roses in her cheeks and a vacuum
still between the ears. In a pur
ple sweater, Miss Manning out-

Helen McCall as Olive Lash-
brooke gave an amusing and vig
orous performance as the Broad
way actress who had been
around too long and too much
on the merry-go-round known
as life, but who still was willing
and able to try once again for
the brass ring.

ly sophisticated as Bill Page, the
soldier with a cosmopolitan back
ground who found himself
cooped up for a week-end with
the girl from Joplin, Mo.
"Voice of the Turtle" was the
third and last Civic Drama guild
play which will be presented
here this season. Tickets for next
season's performances may be
obtained from members of Ro
tana or 20-30 club who jointly
sponsor the plays in Medford.

At Camp White
Camp White The first master
point tournament of the newly
organized Camp White Veterans
Bridge club has been set for
Thursday, March 20, at the
camp. Play will begin at 7:30
p. m. ,
For the regular session of the
club last Thursday, first place
for the north-south playing posi
tion went to Jack Ban- and T. J.
Fuson with 112 points. Second
in this position went to Bob
Dickey and Pete Boyden with
109 points, and third to Mrs.
Paul Hatton and Clyde Ross for
95V4 points. Mrs. Josephine
Clark and John Solheim took
fourth with 94 Vi points.
In the east-west position, Mr.
and Mrs. Arthur Scarseth took
first with 1 151-4 points. Mr. and
Mrs. Marvin C. Kahn were sec
ond with 114Vs points. Two
couples tied for third and fourth.
They were Mrs. Mamie Pruett
and her partner, Mrs. William
Isaacs, and Mrs. James Grigsby
Jr., and Mrs. Ralph Seeley, both
pairs scoring 100V4 points.
Phoenix Society Plans
To Hold Social Evening
Phoenix At a meeting of
the Ladies' Aid society of Phoe
nix Presbyterian church Wednes
day, plans were made for an "ap
ron social" to be held Wednes
day, March 26, at the church.
Families of the church and their
friends in the community are in
vited to attend and join in an
evening of fun and fellowship.

with the prayer circle, conducted
by Mrs. J. O. N. Poling, and Mrs.

Quartet Program Closes
Civic Music

Jackson' County Civic Music
association brought the 1051-52
series of five concerts to a close
Friday, March 14, with the pre
sentation of the National Male
Quartet: Attilio Baggiore, tenor;
Gene Tobin, tenor; Vernon Sand
ers, baritone, and.Bruce McKay,
bass.
The well-known pre-eminence
of each member of the quartet
as an artist in his own field gave
promise of an outstanding eve
ning of musical entertainment
that was generously fulfilled.
So limited and restricted is the
available music originally com
posed and written for male quar
tet that these artists and their ac
companist, Walter Hatchek, as
sisted by - Leonard Marker, ar
ranger, selected from the vast
repertory of opera and song
what seemed to be the universal
favorite in its own class. Taking
each number out of its own set
ting, changing the original key,
without aid of scenery, dramatic
action or orchestra, they devised
four-part harmony that was mu
sically and technically interest

where they sang for Oregon
State colleee. the men took a
10:30 p. m. bus immediately fol
lowing ine concert and were on
their way to towns in Minnesota
for a heavy booking of spring
concerts.
The present series, more or
less confined to light musical en
tertainment, had a definite ap
peal and much regret was ex
pressed that this delightful con
cert should mark the close of the
season.

A popular combination for
both entertainment and fund
raising in the valley is a dinner
and square dance and such an
event has been planned by the
YMCA for March 29 at the "Y".

The dinner will be a smorgas
bord affair, and serving will be
from 6:30 to 9 p. m., the com
mittee states. A large variety of
food will be prepared according
to Mrs. Claude Miles, chairman
of the smorgasbord.
Dancing will be held in the
gymnasium of the "Y" and Gor
don Kershaw will be iq charge
of calling.
Proceeds from the event will
go to the World service fund
through which the work of the
YMCA is carried on in foreign
countries.

Deadline Hearing
On Vet Exemption
Disabled veterans have only
about two weeks in which they
may file applications for their
permissable $1,500 exemption in
the payment of property taxes,
April 1 is the deadline to file
for the exemption, according to
County Assessor C. A. Myers,
