Trip to Norway
In Barrel Plan

Olsen, 68, said Saturday he will
return to his native Norway in
June in a 10-foot long barrel.
The veteran seaman said he
hopes to sail from Sydney, Nova
Scotia, to Norway in 35 days.
The ocean-going "sail -Barrell"
was built by Mark Carlton,
Windsor, Ont., machinist who
had planned to sail the contrap
to England. But Carlton changed
his mind and presented the bar
rel 1 to , Olsen who had it dis
mantled and shipped to Sydney.
Said "Unsinkabla"
Named the "Viking," the bar
rel is 10-feet long and six-feet,
nine inches in dimeter. ' It has
a 700-pound keel and a 250
pound rudder, along with a stern
stabilizing "scoop." It is equipped
with a 29-foot mast, a compass,
'sextant and anchor and, accord
ing to the owner, is unsinkable.
Olsen said he will take along
some butter, canned goods, about
30 gallons of fresh water "and
a prayer for the best."

National Price Index
Unchanged Last Week

average wholesale prices were
unchanged during the week end
ing last Tuesday.
The Bureau of Labor statistics'
index for the week was un
changed at 11.4 per cent of the
1947-49 average. This was the
third week in which prices have
been recorded in the bureau's
new index.
A rise in farm products prices
was offset by lower prices for
processed foods, burlap and alcohol.

Locally Raised Steers
Marketed in Portland
Twelve head of locally raised
two-year-old steers sold on the
Portland - livestock market for
$34.50 per hundred pounds dur
ing the past week, according to
County Agent W. B. Tucker. The
steers, produced by Charlie
Brothers ranch, Brownsboro, av
eraged ' 1,100 pounds, Tucker
stated.
According to the county agent,
the steers were purchased by
Bill von der Hellen and Clayton
Charlie as weaners and were
pastured during summer months
on Buck Lake meadows. The an
imals were fed first cutting al
falfa hay produced on the von
der Hellen ranch, Medford, dur
ing the non-pasture season and
were finished on hay and barley
produced on the Charlie Broth
ers ranch, he stated.

Schoettler, Washington state fish
eries department director, said
today the fish and game depart
ment had challenged the Federal
Power commissioner's license to
the city of Tacoma to build two
dams on the Cowlitz river.
Schoettler said William F.
Hicks, Seattle, chief counsel for
the department, yesterday filed
an appeal in the Ninth Court of
Appeals in San Francisco.
"If we receive an adverse de
cision in the Circuit court, we'll
take the case to the Supreme
Court, Schoettler said.
The fisheries said he based his
case on two points: The FPC has
no authority to grant licenses for
dams on the Cowlitz which is
inside a fish sanctuary created
by the 1949 state legislature; and
the city of Tacoma, as a part of
the state, is illegally asking for
the help of an outside agency to
circumvent state laws.
