' A "flying schoolhouse" leaves
here today for San Francisco just
to prove there's something more
to learning than old-fashioned
readin', writin.. and "rithmetic.
Fifteen students from the
eighth grade of a little country
school in Merlin, which boasts a
population of 300, two general
stores and a postoffice, will take
what they call a "field trip"

it'll be . the climax of a special
'class project on air transporta
tion studied during the winter
school term.

(' Ivory, who also teaches the
eighth grade, developed the avia
tion course five years ago to cov
er every phase of the air indus-
'try, in eluding research, oral re
; ports, term papers and finally
the "field trip." But heretofore
s they merely had toured airports
; or taken short flights around
Oregon.
This year they decided on a
- three-day flight to San Francisco
and raised the money them
selves, sponsoring Sunday chick
en dinners in the schoolhouse,
making candy, showing weekly
.movies and splitting logs for
- f enceposts.
- .They even accumulated an ex
tra $20 in a classroom "kitty"
by collecting a penny for any
grammatical errors and a nickel
for pupils caught chewing gum.
William Cox Funeral
At Ashland Monday
Ashland Funeral services for
.William Alvis Cox, 68, of star
route, Ashland, will be held at
Litwiller funeral home here
Monday at 2 p. m. with the Rev.
John Mathers officiating. Inter
ment will be in Mountain View
cemetery.
The deceased was born in
Greenbriar county; West Vir
ginia, on Oct. 8, 1883, and came
'to Ashland in 1021, where he
located in the Greensprings area
as a logging contractor.
Survivors include his wife,
Virginia; son, Wesley, Talent
and daughter, .Mrs. Joseph Rapp,
Talent.
650,000 Released Since
Start of Korean Fight
: Washington (U.R) The Vet
erans Administration has dis
closed that U. S. armed forces
have released 635,000 persons
from service since the Korean
conflict began.
The VA said the figure was
an average discharge rate of 35,
000 a month.
On January 31, the VA said,
it was providing hospitalization
for 1862 veterans with service
since the Korean war began and
that dependents of 8895 veter
ans who have died since the
Korean outbreak were receiving
benefits on December 31.

Services for Joseph R. DeBar-
be, 61, who died Friday in a
local hospital, will be held in
Conger-Morris Chapel Tuesday
at 1:30 p. m. with the Rev.
George Bolster officiating. Com
mittal will be at Medford Mau
soleum. Mr. DeBarbe was born Jan. 25,
1891, . in San Jose, Calif. On
Dec. 10, 1941, in Carson City,
Nev., he was married to Eu
lalia Cloyd who survives. He
has lived qn his ranch at Eagle
Point for the past year and a
half, coming from Santa Rosa,
Calif.
Other survivors include six
brothers, Roger, Jack, Gus and
William, all of San Jose, Calif.;
Tony, Crows Landing, Calif.;
and Frank, Patterson, Calif.;
and three sisters, Mrs. Mary
Pierce, San Jose; Mrs. Margaret
Reynolds, Sunnyvale, Calif., and
Mrs. Rose Amerol, San Jose.
Pallbearers will be Harry
Houten, Henry Howe, John Har
bison, Bob Mclntyre, Glen Hu
ber and Myron Andrews.

Mrs. McDaniel was born
April 20, 1889, in Juniata, Neb.
She had lived in Oregon since
1928, coming to Medford from
La Grande HVi years ago.

Accountants Meet The Rogue
Valley chapter, Oregon Associa
tion of Public Accountants,' will
hear representatives of the Jack
son county assessor's office speak
on county tax problems when
they meet Monday evening,
March 17. The meeting is open
to non-members, and wives and
husbands of members. Reserva
tions for the dinner, to be served
at 7 p. m., will not be necessary,
officers said. The event will be
held in the Ashland Elks temple.
Injured John M. Baker, Cen
tral Point, was injured about
4:15 p.m. Friday when a board
platform he was working on in
the new Assembly of God church
on West Main street broke. He
fell about 16 feet to a concrete
floor. He was taken to Sacred
Heart hospital by Conger-Morris

vited to committal services in
Logtown cemetery. The family
requests that flowers be omitted.

Mr. Smith was born June S,
1873, in Ruch where he lived
all his life. His parents, the late
Ellgah and Margaret Smith,
were pioneers of the Applegatc
valley, arriving there in the
1850's. On Dec. 26, 1898, in
Jacksonville, he was married
to Elva Law, who survives.
Other survivors Include three
sons, Lester E., Medford; A. Ev
erett, Redlands, Calif, and Glenn
W Ruch; a daughter, Mrs. Jes
sie Hopkins, Napa, Calif.; a
brother, Joe, San Francisco; and
six grandchildren. - I
