Of Book Benefits
In Okinawa Gift
James A. Johnson, an Army
corporal now in Okinawa with
headquarters company, 8118th
AU, this week told of benefits
from a gift of books given by
Medford Junior high school stu
dents.
Corporal Johnson,-son of Mr.
and Mrs. Walter A. Johnson, 325
South Ivy street, and his wife,
the former Miss Marlene Kayser,
Is now with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. William Kayser, 104 King
Street.
. Corporal Johnson, in a letter
to the Junior high school, en
closed a copy of the Ryukyuan
Review, published on the island,
which included an item concern
ing the books sent from the Med
ford school.
Talis of Gift
The item read: 'Two boxes of
children's books were received
here through CARE from schools
in the United States., The books
are from pupils of Medford jun
ior high school in Medford, Ore.,
and the fifth grade of the Henry
Clay school in Arlington, Va.
The books will be distributed
to the Naha junior high school
and the Jogaku junior high
school, both in Naha.
Corporal Johnson wrote, "It
made me feel good to know that
the schools of my home town
are doing something to spread
good will among these people
Please keep up the good work."
Attended St. Mary's
The corporal is a graduate of
St. Mary's academy here. He
entered the service in September,
1950, and left for Okinawa just
after Christmas, 1951. He re
ceived his basic training at Ft.
Ord, Calif., and then served at Ft.
Eustis, Va., until leaving for
overseas.
The students at the junior high
school here, according to Glen
Linn, principal, participated in
a contest during national book
week. Those who won prizes of
books this year gave them to
CARE for distribution .overseas.
Textile Painting '
Class Set at 'Y'
The YMCA Saturday an
nounced a new textile painting
class to start on Wednesday,
March 19, in the craft room of
the YMCA building. Methods of
stencil painting, design and
proper use of textile paints will
be taught by Mrs. Quentin Bai
ley, volunteer instructor for the
YMCA.
Eight lessons will be given.
The fee will be $5 for non-members.
Those desiring to join may
phone for reservations.

Talent Alfalfa
Growers To Meet
Wednesday Evening
A special meeting of Talent al
falfa seed growers has been call
ed for 8 p. m. Wednesday, March
19, at the Central Point Grange
halL -.
County Agent W. B. Tucker
stated that the meeting has been
called to explain to the 215
growers of the seed a proposal
to place Talent alfalfa on the
national crop improvement pro
gram.
The program aims at produc
ing and maintaining high qual
ity seed in four classes, breeder's,
foundation, registered and cer
tified. It is designed to prevent
mixtures and "run out" seed,
Tucker said. . -

promotion committee will con
duct the session. Harold Fin
nell, crop certification special
ist of Oregon State college, who
has traced the "family tree" of
every planting of Talent alfalfa
in Jackson county, will advise
the group on the present status
of plantings.
There are 2,296 acres planted
to the Talent variety in Jackson
county. Tucker stated that Jack
son county has more certified
alfalfa seed than any other
county in Oregon. There was a
greater acreage of Talent cer
tified in 1951 in the state than
of any other variety, he added.
WITCHCRAFT RECALLED
