Medford Students Winners
In District Speech Meet
Nine Medford high school stu
dents qualified Friday and Sat
urday to take part in the annual
state speech league contest April
4 and 5 in Eugene. A Medford
senior high school student and a
Medford junior high student
were also named alternates to the
state meet.
The Medford students won the
right to take part in the state
tournament by placing first or
second in the southern Oregon
district meet held at Crater high
school. Those who placed third
were named alternates.
Four schools took part In the
southern Oregon meet. They
were Medford, Crater of Central
Point, Ashland, and Grants Pass.
Jerry McDougall, Crater high
speech instructor and southern
Oregon district director, was in
charge of the meet.
The Medford high school de
bate team of Bill McAllister Jr.
and Richard Dickenson won four
debates and lost two to take first
place in that event.
Janet Coyle, Medford, took
first place in humorous reading
competition and Nancy Mallon,
Crater, was second. Bob Laws,
Ashland, was named as an al
ternate. First place in poetry reading
competition was won by Pat
Wurner, Grants Pass. Lewis
Bright, Medford, was second) and
Beth Fenton, Medford, was
named as an alternate.
Steve Nye, Medford, received
top rating in radio competition.

Pass.

Franklin, Mrs. Earl Bigalow,

the meeting. Marietta E. Horn,
Grants Pass unit president, will
introduce Mrs. Hazel Henry,

Utilities Commissioner Charles
H. Heltzel said Saturday that the
issuance of ' new PUC license
plates for the 1952-53 period
has been completed.
Some 50,000 sets of plates have
been issued since the work be
gan in January. The new plates
have white letters and figures on
a green background.
Heltzel said the state police
have been asked to stop and is
sue warnings to all vehicle op
erators with old plates from
now until March 31. Beginning
next month citations will be is
sued to all operators having in
valid plates.

Guilty to Burglar
Ernest Emery LaDuke, Talent,
waived grand Jury Indictment
and pleaded guilty, in - circuit
court on Friday to a charge of
burglary not in a dwelling house,'
the district attorney's office re
ported. His case was continued
for sentencing.
LaDukrJ is accused of entering
Bryant's Key shop on March 11.
