losses probably will rise. So far
the rate of Sabre loss is only one
for every eight MIGs downed.
, Slow Firing Blamed . ...
But many a Sabre pilot is fly
ing today who would not be,
except for the MIGs slow-firing
cannon and inaccurate optical
gunsight, according to this ob
server.
How much progress Russia
may have made in copying the
Air Force's electronic comput
ing sight is not known. Nor is
it -known whether Russia actual
ly has possession of one of the
sights, which control gunfire.

Sight .Examined
But it is established that Rus
sians or their agents have ex
amined and probably photo
graphed the Sperry-built sight,
called the.A-10.
The sight on at least one of
two F-84s which made forced
landings in Czechoslovakia in
June, 1951, was dismantled. It
was intact when the planes were
returned to the Air Force, how
ever.
There also is the possibility
that the Reds may have salvaged
a sight from a downed plane in
Korea. There is no way of know
ing whether they were destroyed
in all such cases.
The A-10 automatically solves
fire control problems. A pilot
in line with his target sees a
circular pattern of light on his
windshield and presses 'the fir
ing switch. The sight computes
range, altitude and dive angle.
In dive bombing against
ground targets, not even a switch
has to be pressed. At the proper
point in the dive, the sight auto
matically releases the bomb.
Copying the Sperry sight
would be tough going even

fusal of teamsters to drive buses
prevented 3,500 workers from
reaching their jobs. He said the
number idled by the strike would
reach 5,500 by Saturday if no
settlement was reached. '
The teamsters went on strike
to protest the assignment by the
company of loading and unload
ing work to Local 598- of the
Plumbers' and Steamfijtters' un
ion, AFL.
The walkout affected only the
$185,000,000 expansion program
begun at the plant about two
years ago. , .

Point Joy club met at the home

right to censor motion pictures
may be tested in the U. S. Su
preme Court on a Marshall, Tex.,
theater owner s defiance of cen
sorship of the movie "Pinky."
The film about a light-skinned
Negro girl who wanted to marry
a white man was shown at W. I,
Ceiling's theater in Marshall
over protest of the city censor
ship board which based its ruling
on an old city ordinance.
Gelling was convicted on two
counts under the ordinance and
was fined $200. The Texas Court
of Criminal Appeals upheld the
conviction.
Presiding Judge Harry N.
Graves Thursday signed an or
der of the Texas Court of Civil
Appeals permitting Gelling's ap
peal to go to the U. S, Supreme
Court.

Doomed Boy Gets Answer to Wish

happy lad Friday because his
greatest wish has been answered.
Patrick Kaech, four-year-old
son of Mr. ' and Mrs. Albert
Kaech of Klaber, Wash., has the
cocker spaniel puppy he has
been asking for.
Radio Station KELA broadcast
an appeal for a dog for the boy,
who is bedridden with cancer.
Within minutes, Mrs. Larry Sero
shek of Centralia called to say
she had a thoroughbred cocker
spaniel puppy for Pat -
"I shall marry a beautiful
woman; I shall be one of the
wealthiest men in the land; I
shall lead the army of my col
ony; I shall rule the nation
which I help to create," George
Washington wrote in a letter
when he was only 12 years old.

On Pacific County
Bribery Charges

Samuel Emmanuel, resigned
state land board secretary who
was convicted on a bribery
charge in Thurston county last
week, was free of similar charges
in Pacific county Friday.
But he still faces trial in Che
halis on three counts of asking
and receiving a bribe.
Short Deliberation
A Pacific county jury of sev
en men and five women returned
a verdict of innocent at 5:45
p. m. Thursday after less than
three hours of deliberation. Em
manuel had been charged with
asking a bribe of Erwin Ander
son, Naselle logger, in . return
for influencing state timber
sales.
Emmanuel's face lit up with
obvious relief when the verdict
was read. He spoke briefly to
Judge John J. Langenbach and
left the courtroom with his wife,
friends and attorneys Tracy
Griffin and Lee Olwell. He did
not speak to the jurors.
Emmanuel goes on trial again
April 22 in Chehalis where he
is accused of receiving bribes
on three different "occasions
from J. H. England, Winlock
lumberman, in return for ex
tending the deadline for cutting
timber on state lands in the To-
ledo-Winlock area of Lewis
county. The alleged bribes, to
taling $1,500, took place Oct.
6, 1949; March 30, 1950, and
April 13, 1951.
