tin" reported Thursday that pri
vate building construction in the
Pacific Northwest and northern
Intermountain states increased
50 -per cent in February over
January. .
Permits in 93 key cities in
Oregon, Washington, Idaho,
Utah, Montana and Wyoming to
talled $21,688,577.
Washington, led by King coun
ty with nearly $4 million in per
mits, topped the states in Feb
ruary with a total of $13,868,
981. Oregon, led by Portland
with $3,146,140, was next with
$5,098,056- 7
Idaho, including $349,938 in
Boise', which was 10th among
cities in the area, had a total of
$759,518 for third place. Utah
was. next with $751,205, inclu
ding $489,255 in sixth place Salt
Lake City. Wyoming's total was
$617,330 -and Montana's $603,

Thursday opened bids on high
way projects totaling $2,250,000.
Among the larger jobs was
grading on the Moiser-The Dalles
section of the Columbia River
highway. Rogers Construction
Co., Portland, was low bidder
with $610,123;
Square Dance Event
Planned at Ashland
Ashland Medford square
dancers have been invited to at
tend the Ashland YMCA Square
Dance jamboree Saturday night,
according to Bob Jones, Medford
"Y" secretary. The Medford "Y"
benefit square dance, usually
held on the first and third Sat
urday of each month, will be
cancelled to allow dancers to
participate in the Jamboree,
Jones said.
Among the seven local square
dance callers who will take part
in the jamboree are Gordon Ker
shaw, Jack Crump, Bennie Park
hurst, Sam Conner, "Dan Neil,
Gary Conrad and John Neider-
meir. An admission tee will be
charged and refreshments will
be available.

Veterans Hour
Program Readied
At Camp White' '
The "Make Believers, fea
turing vocalist Judy March and
three male voices, will highlight
the first "Veterans Hour pro
gram, scheduled for 7:30 p. m.
Friday in the Camp White domi
ciliary theater.
The Hollywood entertainers'
act includes musical pantomine
accompanied by recording of
noted artists. Also on the pro
gram will be Charlie Mack, Hol
lywood radio, movie and tele
vision performer who wiU act
as guest master of ceremonies.
Local Acts
Local acts on the program will
include the "Hungry Five," a
comedy musical group; a novelty
dance act by Miss Colleen Hope,
and a comedy banjo and steel
guitar duet by Ralph Ettel and
J. Coffee.
A portion of the program will
be devoted to an audience par
ticipation quiz show for domi
ciliary center veterans. Prizes
will be given to various winners
and a grand prize will go to
the top contestant.
The program, which is spon
sored by Myers-Holland Amer
ican Legion post, Central Point,
will be recorded and broadcast
Saturday by radio station KYJC.
James Dunlevy, KYJC station
manager, will conduct the broad
cast. .
The public has been invited
to the Friday program in the
Camp White theater.
Attorney Recalled
To Duty in Marines
Don Pedersen, a Medford at
torney since 1949 and a first lieu
tenant in the U. S. Marine Corps
Reserve, has been recalled to
extended active duty, he report
ed today.
Pedersen has been associated
here in practice with O. H. Beng-
ston, with offices at 123 West
Main street. During World War
II he was a pilot of Marine Corps
dive bombers on the east coast.
He will reenter the service on
April 1, he said, and will take
an eight-week refresher course
at Seattle before reporting to El
Toro Marine Corps base in Cali
fornia - for duty. His wife, the
former Mavis Nichols, will ac
company him. They were mar
ried last September, and she is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
F. E. Nichols, 622 South Holly
street.

Presentation of the certificate
was made by Dr. Elmo' Steven
son, district governor of Lions
International, who cited New
berry for his 24 years of active
participation in the work of the
local club. It was pointed out
that, he is approaching 21 years
of perfect attendance : at club
meetings and served as president
in 1931-32.
Larry Neely, international di
rector, and Al Crose, internation
al councilor from Salem, who
was a charter member of the
Medford den, also participated
in the presentation ceremonies.
Bruce McMahon, Eugene, was
also a guest at the meeting.
CAA Identification
Cards Said Necessary
All airmen, including pilots,
mechanics and others, must have
their identification cards on their
person at all times while per
forming their duties, Charles F.
Horne, administrator of civil
aeronautics, warned today.
CAA aviation safety agents in
the field have begun more spe
cific checking on this require
ment and the administrator
urged all airmen to comply with
the law to avoid being cited for
violation.
Agents will ask to see the air
man's certificate, his medical
certificate where required, and
his special identification card
recently required by the civil
aeronautics board at the request
of the military authorities.
If a person is performing air
man duties without having the
proper proof of his qualifications
on his person, he will be cited
for a violation which may in
volve a fine.

Bulletins in Case
Of Enemy Attack
Salem U.B If this country
is ever attacked by an enemy
force, the public will have an
insatiable demand for informa
tion, the state, civil defense
agency said Thursday.
But it cautioned that, after
any attack; ieople should wait
for official bulletins over the
radio and in the press, and dis
regard rumors they hear on the
street corners.
The advice was given on "Sur
vival," the Oregon civil defense
radio broadcast. Ivan B. McKin
ney, deputy director for com
munications, described, the im
portant task the mass informa
tion media would : have after
major disasters. He asked that
people plan to' "tune their eyes
and ears .only to official
sources." To do otherwise, he
said, would invite confusion.
Public UMT Debate
Scheduled Sunday
A public debate on' the merits
of universal - military training
will be conducted at the First
Methodist church here at 3 p. m.
Sunday, it was announced today.
It is under the sponsorship ' of
the World Peace committee of
the church.
Dr. William Thompson, a Na
tional Guard officer, will take
the affirmative, favoring UMT,
and the negative will be taken
by Orval Etter, a Berkeley,
Calif., attorney and far west sec
retary of the Fellowship of Re
conciliation. ,
Hugh Jennings will summarize
the talks, - and Dr. Paul Bray
will preside. '
Despite the recent postpone
ment of action on the congres
sional UMT bill, interest in the
subject remains, those in charge
pointed out, and the bill may be
revived. The public is invited to
attend. The church is located at
West Main and Laurel streets.

pulp were shipped to Europe for
use as cattle feed. Many of the
bags have come back filled with

Seaman Bateman, aboard an
LST bound for Korea, wrote to
his parents, "I am going to put
in a plug for the Red Cross, be
cause I don't think some people
give it credit for the wonderful
work they are doing. So many
men to try to do for and they
are in there pitching all the
time.
"Today, when they were down
at the ship giving coffee and
cookies, it showed me that they
are doing a bang-up job. I am
proud to be serving a nation
with people like that in it. I've
seen so many people just trying
to take the service men, but
these people are trying to help
build them up and it is really
doing a lot of good."
