that the beauty
is she.
She posed,

Alio Motor the artistic

"I was broke and needed the
money.
"Oh, -the- calendar's hanging
in garages all over town," said
Marilyn. "Why deny it? You can
get one any place.
"Besides, I'm not ashamed of
it. I've done nothing wrong."
The beautiful blonde now gets
a fat paycheck every week from
an excited 20th Century Fox Stu
dio. She's rated the most sen
sational sweater girl since Lana

pensive hotel room . . . she dines

Just Another Blond
But in 1949 she was just an
other scared young blonde, strug
gling to find fame In the magic
city, and all alone. As a child
she livesd in a Hollywood
orphanage. She was pushed
around among 12 sets of foster
parents before she turned an
insecure 16.
After an unsuccessful mar
riage, she moved into Holly
wood's famed Studio Club, home
of hopeful actresses.
Called Photographer
"I was a week behind on my
rent," she explained. "I had to
have the money. A photographer,
Tom Kelley, had asked me be
fore to pose but I'd never do

said I would as soon as possible,
to get it over with.

Marilyn speaks in a breath
less, soft voice, and she's always
very serious about every word
she says.
Everyone Knew Her
"Tom didn't think anyone
would recognize me," she, said.
"My hair was long then. But
when the picture came out, ev

have done it if I'd known things
would happen in Hollywood so
fast for me."
Marilyn's bosses at plushy Fox
Studio reached for the ulcer tab

somed out in January.'
"I was told I should deny I'd
posed . . . but I'd rather be hon
est about it. I've gotten a lot of
fan letters on it. The men like
the picture and want copies. The
women, well ...
"One gossip columnist said I
autographed the pictures and
handed them out and said 'art
for art's sake.' I never said that.
"Why, I only gave two away,"
said Marilyn, and blinked those
big, blue eyes.

Age of Oldest
Indian Site Set
By Combined Work
London, Ont. U.PJ Construc
tion crews, archaeologists and
atomic scientists have combined
in Ontario to establish the age
of the oldest Indian site yet dis
covered in the province.
Excavations by construc
tion crews near Port Franks,
Ont., uncovered signs of Indian
life at " three . different levels.
They called in the archaeologists
of the University of Western On
tario, who gathered samples and
sent them to physicists at the
The Chicago physicists, work
ing with charcoal samples dis
covered near Port Franks and
sent to them by Wilfrid Jury,
curator of the museum of Urn
versity of Western Ontario, were
able to set the age of the old
Indian site at 2,690, plus or minus
220 years. The charcoal was
found more than six feet below
the surface. Along with it were
fish and game bones, stone pot
tery and flint chips.
The physicists used their
knowledge of radioactivity to de
termine the age of the charcoal.
Carbon 14, a radioactive iso
tope, is found in charcoal and
the rate of decay from the full
state of radioactivity is known.
Examining the charcoal for the
amount of radioactivity remain
ing, the scientists were able to
calculate the amount of decay
and the age of the sample.
Jury placed the Indian inhabi
tants at the site at about the
same time as the Mound Builders
of Ohio. The Mound Builders
were known to be Indians and
lived in mound-shaped homes
which they built along the shores
of the Mississippi river. They oc
cupied the continent before the
better known American Indian
of later centuries.
