Comedian Hugh Herbert, 66,
whose fidgety hands and gig
gling "woo woo" brought
chuckles to movie and theater
goers for four decades, died sud
denly at his home Wednesday
night of a heart attack.
The smiling little comedian
with the baggy eyes succumbed
shortly after 7 p. m. PST, to
end a carer of performing, writ
ing and directing that included
nearly a quarter of a century
in vaudeville.
Hewas attended by his per
sonal physician and long-time
friend, Dr. Victor Kovner, who
said Herbert called him a short
time before he died and com
plained of feeling ill.
The doctor went to Herbert's
home, but the comedian died
soon after he arrived.
Husband, Grocery
Shopping, Shot
Denver (U.R) A 55-year-old
husband looked up from his hos
pital bed Thursday and said
"from now on my wife does
the grocery shopping."
The husband, Willard Geer,
was shot through the neck when
he interrupted a $2,500 holdup
of a grocery store.
"I've been trying to tell her
for years," Geer said. "But the
shooting clinched it. From now
on, Mildred my wife does the
grocery buying."
Geer was shot when he walked
into a Safeway store here. When
one of the four stickup men
told him this is a "holdup," Geer
said "I laughed and said 'oh,
yeah?' "
The gunman shot him.
Late Wednesday night, police
captured, the three men and a
blonde woman who admitted the
robbery and shooting.

schoolboy dashed into
the path of Union Pacific's
streamliner "City of Los An
geles" here and escaped with
only a broken leg.

Mr. and Mrs. John Duran, ran
from between sidetracked cars
into the fast-moving streamlin
er's path Wednesday. Train En
gineer Ralph Broderick heard
the thud and notified officials
that he believed a boy had been
killed.
A search of the area failed to
turn up a body and it was later
disclosed the boy walked from
the scene of the accident until
his leg began to hurt. His 14-
year-od brother, Andy, carried
him the rest of the way home.

Building Starts

five-year job of building the
$3,500,000 The Dalles dam be
gan Thursday following cere
monies attended by an estimated
5,000 persons.
Detonations of six tons of
dynamite on the Washington
shore climaxed the festivities.
Unlike a previous explosion two
weeks ago,-no fish were killed.
This blast was on dry land.
New Era Seen
Gov. Douglas McKay of Ore
gon said he believed completion
of the dam would mark start of
a new era in which industry will
surpass Oregon's leading re
sources, timber and agricvKure.
The dam, when completed,
will have a capacity of 1,092,000
kilowatts twice as much as
Bonneville dam.
During construction, popula
tion of The Dalles is expected
to increase by 6,000 almost
double its present size.
The Dalles promptly dubbed
itself: "The best dam town in
the U. S."
Girdle Included
In Shirt Campaign
For Congressmen
Washington 0J.R) A shirts-for-congressmen
campaign start
ed in California has been
stretched to include girdles, it
was learned Wednesday.
Rep. Hubert Scudder, R-Calif..
said he got a girdle in the mail
with a tart but unsigned note
suggesting a little more "figure
control" by Congress. ,
The shirt campaign recently
nrae started bv a California farm
bureau official named Don Mc-
Colly During a speech against
high taxes he took off his shirt
and said he was going to send
it to his congressman to show he
couldn't pay any more. He sug
gested his listeners do the same.
A check of California con
gressmen showed that about 60
shirts and the girdle have ar
rived so far.
With the girdle was a note say
ing: "Since you people don't know
how to control figures in Wash
ington, why should I try to con
trol by own figure here at
home?"
Bank Assistant Faces
Charge of Embezzlement
New York U.R) Fred E.
Riedel, 57, assistant head of a
coin department in a bank, was
charged Wednesday with em
bezzling $800 in quarters over
an eight-year period. When ar
rested by FBI agents Tuesday,
Riedel had 141 quarters in his
pockets, representing the day's
take.
Berlin came back as a tourist
center with an increase of 73
per cent in the number of foreign
visitors in 1951 over the' pre
vious year, the total reaching
1,2747,000.
