Arthritis Sufferers Claim
Uranium Mines Give Help
Boulder. Mont. (U.R) The
question has been raised here of
whether there can be something
In a uranium mine that will help
sufferers from arthritis.
Physicians and scientists are
interested.
A uranium mine in this small
southwestern Montana commun
ity began operations last year.
Since then several ailing persons
who have visited the mine claim
to have noticed a marked im
provement in their condition.
However, some medical au
thorities believe it may be what
they call a "psychosomatic con
dition." In other words, the ar
thritis sufferers, some of whom
may not actually have arthritis,
may be getting a form of mental
relief.
Operator Concerned
Doctors also pointed out that
there are several forms of ar
thritis, and something which
helps one form may be of no
value for those suffering from
another form of the disease.
Wade Lewis, president of the
Elk Horn Mining Co., which op
erates the mine, is concerned
about the matter.
"It would be tragic," he said,
"for any belief to get out that
there was a so-called 'miracle
cure' for arthritis in the mine."
It is quite possible, he said,
that the mine has nothing to do
with the arthritis victims' im
provement. In that case, persons
suffering from arthritis who vis
ited the mine in hopes of being
cured "might easily be in for a
crushing let-down," he said.
Radon Gas In Mine
One thing that might have
something to do with it is the
presence of radon gas in the low
er levels of the mine. Radon is
a heavier-than-air gas given off
by radium. Several years ago the
gas in the old shaft was strong
enough to put a geiger counter
over its high scale and out of
action for an hour or so
Air was forced into the shaft
and the radon gas blown out. Be
fore that was done, it was im
possible to do any work in the
lower levels because the strong
radioactivity was dangerous to
miners.
Possible presence of radon
gas has at least one physicist,
who asked that his name not be
used, alarmed.
He fears that if there is enough
radioactivity in the mine to help
arthritis sufferers, it is possible

Korea Pilot Sends
Note to Landlord
Who Evicted Yife
At a Jet Fighter Base, Korea
(U.R) Sabrejet Pilot Capt. Con
rad E. Mattson Wednesday asked
his wife in Springfield, Mass., to
tell the landlord who gave her
an eviction notice:
"Thanks for nothing, and the
next MIG I get will be for him."
Mattson learned of his wife's
predicament Wednesday after
shooting down his second MIG.
He downed his first Tuesday.
Mrs. Mattson, mother of three
children ranging from nine
months to four years of age, was
informed Tuesday that she must
vaeate her house by April 8.

Mattson received first word of
the afafir from the United Press
and asked that the following
message be sent to his wife:
"Have just been informed of
your being evicted and must va
cate by April 8. 1 am much wor
ried. Please check legal rights
in this particular case. If nothing
can be done contact Westover
Air Base to effect the move.

evicting us, 'thanks for nothing,
and the. next MIG I get will be

Claims It Helped
Talk of a possible arthritis
cure in the mine started when
the wife of a California mining
engineer visited it with her hus
band. The woman, who said she
was suffering from arthritis,
said she noticed improvement in
her condition within a few days
after her visit down the shaft.
Later she told a friend who
also suffered from the disease.
The friend also noticed improve
ment after visiting the mine.
Lewis then decided to have
the matter investigated and told
physicians and at least one clinic
about the reports.
One scientist summed it up
this way:
"There hasn't been enough
work done to establish any sci
entific knowledge about the
whole thing. It's much too early
to make any scientific comment
about it one way or another."

Spokane Laundrymen
Receive Pay Increase
Spokane (U.R) Laundry and
dry cleaning service customers
Wednesday faced probable new
price increases as the result of
the settlement of a wage dispute
here.
A threatened strike of 600
union laundry and dry cleaning
workers was headed off Tuesday
with a settlement providing for
an hourly pay boost of IVi cents
for laundry workers and 10
cents an hour for dry cleaning
workers.
Portlander To Face
Narcotics Hearing

faced a removal hearing in fed
eral court to return him to San
Francisco to answer a narcotics
charge after waiving a prelim
inary hearing.
De Pinto, whose police record
dates back to 1920, was indicted
by a 'San Francisco federal
grand jury as an alleged mem
ber of a nationwide narcotics
supply ring.

chicken house roof. The fire was
extinguished by Bob Gail and

motored to Portland over the
week end with Pat Fahey of
Grants Pass. They were house
guests of Dorothy and Stuart
Bennett and while there Mrs.
Friedenthal attended the art ex
hibit at Meier and Frank art
gallery. On Sunday the Frieden
thals dined with Ed's sister and
her family, the Austin Moyers
at" Dundee, Ore. Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Huntley and son Henry
and his wife of Eugene were also
guests at the Moyer home. Mrs.
Huntley is Friedenthal's sister.
Frank Lake who has resided
here for many years and was a
member of the old Woodville
band, suffered a heart attack
Sunday and was taken to the
Josephine General hospital. He
is reported to be improving.
Mrs. Vern Bayliss is spending
a week in Torrence, Calif.,
where she is visiting her daugh
ter and a sister.
V.F.W. auxiliary will hold a
food sale at Gelvin's Groceteria
on Saturday.
There will be a St. Patrick's
dance at the V.F.W. club rooms
next Saturday night Chuck
Wheat's orchestra will play and
there will be fun and favors.
