About Bankruptcy

Keyserling, chairman of Presi
dent Trvman's council of eco
nomic advisers, emphatically
disagreed with congressional
warnings that the United States
may be' spending itself into
"bankruptcy."
He also believes it would be
better f r o m - an economist's
point of view to raise taxes
enough to put the rearmament
program on a pay-as-we-go basis.
That would require a tax in
crease of some $14 billion a year,
but Keyserling thinks it would
be "cheaper in the long run than
inflation."

His -belief that- the United
States is still in healthy eco
nomic condition despite the
strains of the defense program
was expounded in recent testi
mony before a House appropria
tions subcommittee. The closed
door testimony was published
Tuesday.

Seen Strong Economically
Keyserling replied:
"A nation whose national in
come and national output has
been rising five, six or seven per
cent a year, or even more, ana
which is fully using its man
power and resources in the pro
duction of an enormous quant
ity of goods and services is, 1
believe, very strong economical
ly. "T do not think that a nation
in which private enterprise was
investing last year at me annual
rate of about $55 billion is in
bad shape economically."
Ceremonies To Mark
Start of Dalles Dam
The Dalles, Ore. (U.R) Spec
ial ceremonies were scheduled
here Wednesday, to mark the
opening of The Dalles dam con
struction.
A parade in downtown area
at 2 p.m. was to open the cele
bration, followed by a program
at the Big Eddy offices of the
Army engineers. A gigantic ex
plosion was to be set off where
contractors have started blasting
and drilling operations for the
dam.
A ceremonial banquet was
scheduled at 6:30 p.m. with Gov.
Douglas McKay as principal
speaker.

Of Cold Apartment

ious electrical engineer has solv
ed his cold war problem with
his landlord.
Welvin A. Carter connected a
thermostat to a recording ma
chine and whenever the temper
ature dropped below 65 degrees
a loudspeaker concealed close to
the landlards apartment would
blare: "A landlord who does not
provide 65-degree heat when it
is less than 65 outside is liable
to a $500 fine or a year in jail."
The landlord promised to fur
nish the necessary heat.
