Aline Moiby been scouring
the cinema city for a caloried
cutie to play 287-pound Thomas
Gomez' Indian wife in "Pony
Soldier." But the Hollywood
dolls are too busy dieting.
So when Miss Landers hap
pened to visit the town and
lunch with a friend in the Fox
commissary, bedlam busted
loose.
She was, to be exact, discov
ered over a piece of banana
cream pie. The casting director
leaped to her table and begged
her to take a movie test. .
Lands Leading Role
The pretty brunette was
whirled through the wardrobe
department . . . tested in techni
color . . . and signed for the
leading role before her ' hefty
lunch had a chance to settle.
"The studio claims I'm 225
but I'm only 201. Don't make it
any worse," she chuckled, all
over.
She's only five feet one inch
tall, too, just ike two Marilyn
Monroes.
"When the casting director
saw me he grinned as though a
light had gone on," she said.
"He called the director of the
picture and they all were smil
ing broadly.
"After the test everybody
around the studio looked at me
and grinned and I thought may
be my slip was showing.
Papooses in Picture
"Finally this big gentleman
comes along and shouts 'How!'
1 said 'Why?' He was Thomas
Gomez, very big, and I knew
why they were laughing. He
says wait till I see the eight
chubby papooses we have in the
picture."
Miss five-by-five started out to
be an opera singer in Chicago
but ate her way out of that ca
reer. So she crashed into New
York television to play charac
ter roles with Frank Sinatra, Ed
Wynn and Jack Benny.
"I kept putting on weight, in
layers," she smiled. "My name
isn't too well known, but any-1

She Won't Diet
She doesn't regret overeating
and she'll never diet, either.
"I've never had to look for
jobs," she shrugged. "In New
York every time I eat in a res
taurant some TV producer of

me with open arms. Not being
a glamour girl hasn't hindered
me.
"I find audiences like me, too.
After all, half the women in the
audience are more like me than
Lana Turner."
AnnualSwim-O-Ree
Tomorrow Evening
The annual Swim-O-Ree for
Boy Scouts of this area will be
held at the YMCA pool at 7:30
p.m. Wednesday under the spon
sorship of Troop 3, it was .an
nounced today. Only scouts not
explorers are eligible to com
pete. Events in the swimming com
petition will include a towel
race, inner tube race, tired swim
mers carry, egg and spoon race,
underwater race, bottle cap div
ing, water walking race, speed
relay, free style race, tug-o-war,
wheelbarrow race, match stick
race, and others.
Scouts are to be ready to go
into the water at 7:30 pjn. sharp.
Visitors will be welcome to
witness the event, but scouters
warned them that the pool room
is warm and damp.
The Roberts swim-o-ree tro
phy, now held by the sponsoring
unit, will be awarded to the win
ning troop.

expelled from the Communist
party for his love of American
cigarettes.
' The report said the ousted of

New York (U.R) There are
comeback stories in science ev
ery bit as unusual as those in
sports.
One such is the story of neo
mycin, the antibiotic discovered
by the famed Dr. Selman Waks
man in 1949. Announcement of
its discovery created a stir in
medical circles.
Laboratory tests with animals
and bacterial cultures indicated
that here was as potent a weapon
as ever was given medicine in its
battle against human disease.
In actual work with human
disease victims, the new "won
der" drug proved too toxic for
the human body to tolerate. The
ditches in the high road to scien
tific progress are lined with simi
lar spectacular failure. They are
failures which looked vonderful

Scientists Carry On
One group of scientists at the
Upjohn company in Kalamazoo,
Mich., refused to quit on neomy
cin. They refined it more care
fully, stepped up its purity and
potency and finally developed a
dosage form in which the drug,
again in the laboratory, was
highly effective in treating stub
born pus-forming skin infections.
Again the drug went out for
clinical testing. This time the re
sults were different.

most important addition to our
therapeutic armamentarium . .
Dr. Clarence S. Livingood, pro
fessor of dermatology at the Urn
versity of Texas Medical school,
Galveston, noted that the drug
gave a "prompt, completely sat
isfactory response" in treating
264 difficult skin cases, many of
whom had been treated with no
success with other antibiotics be
fore being given neomycin.
Drug Found Useful
The drug, in ointment and wet
compress form, was evaluated by
Dr. Roy L. Kile, of the Univer
sity of Cincinnati's College of
Medicine, after tests on 800 pa
tients, in these words:
"Neomycin was far more effec
tive for most skin infections
than other topical agents we have
used."
Subsequent reports by other
investigators in skin diseases
bore out the work of Drs. Livin
good and Kile.
The story of neomycin and its
amazing comeback is not -yet
over. Further research is point
ing to the development of dosage
forms which can be used intern
ally and which may make neo
mycin one of the most important
of all antibiotics.

boy's decision to play hookey
ended in his death.
Larry Lupton, frustrated over
the subjects he couldn't master
in school, decided Monday to
hop a freight train and ' seek
his education in travel and ad
venture. His crushed body was

pieces of mail after waiting as
long as three years for delivery.
The mail was found in the home
of a lazy rural carrier.
