As Dune put it, he "smells
music."
"You hear enough of it," he
says, "and after a time you get
o you know whether they are
hollering or singing."
Emrich is a hard working guy
and." because of his efforts the
biggest library in the world has
the biggest collection of folklore
music.
He goes after music where mu
sic is corn the folklore kind.
Hears From Tipster.
A tipster will tell him about
a song that was made up by a
weary chain gang of prisoners
and Dune will gather a crew,
take a recording machine, and
sneak up on the jailbirds. The
song may never be played on
the radio or disced for the gram
ophones but it will be recorded
for history and stored in the li
brary archives.
Another tip might find our
man scooting off to the coal
fields of Pennsylvania or south
ern Illinois.
Some of the songs of the Old
West are recorded in the base
ment of the library.
"Pick" Temple, who is popu
lar hereabouts, has made scores
of recordings, most of them at
the library.
Variations fo Tunes
"There are variations to many
of the old tunes," he told me.
"Which points up the fact that
there is no such thing as a new
ong."
Pick's theme song is called "On
Top of Old Smokey."
"The music is about the same,
but I have rejiggered it a little,"
he said. "Also I have changed
the words a little. Some of the

According to Emrich, a great
many of the 80,000 song titles
on record at the library are in
the public domain meaning you
can't be sued for using them
without getting permission of
the music makers or Caesar
Petrillo, the kingpin of the mu
sicians union.

tive, as indeed they, have been
since the first note was written.
"The Russians are. a great
hand at it," said Emrich.' "They
will monitor an American radio
station, turn a Red composer
loose on a song and pretty soon
they will come out with their
own version and claim it as their
own."
The tune that Emrich is proud
of was made by four former
sailors he found in California
all over 80. Capt. Leighton Rob
inson, of Mill Valley, Calif.,
aged 84, took the lead in "Away
Rio." Dune wouldn't take a mil
lion for that record.

Dormant Spray May
Be Applied Any Time
Dormant spray on apples and
pears may be applied any time
the weather is suitable. About
10 days remain before it will
be too late on pears. We have a
little more time on apples.
Use three gallons liquid lime
sulfur and 2V gallons dormant
011 emulsion per 100 gallons.
This is for control of San Jose
scale and blister mite. On Nelis
for scab wait until delayed dor
mant, omit oil, and use 10 gal
ions lime sulfur.
For speed sprayers use 12 gal
lons of liquid lime sulfur and
10 gallons dormant oil per acre.
On Nelis use 40 gallons lime
sulfur per acre.
On apples, for rosy aphis only,
use one pound of dormant dini
tro plus one gallon of dormant
011 per 100 gallons.

Military Air . Transport plane
crashed and burned Monday at
Offutt Air Force. Base. All 12
persons aboard escaped without
injury.
It was the second , crash of a
heavy, plane in less than two
weeks at the base, Lome of the
Strategic Air Command.

In commercial peach orchards
where a spray was applied last
fall, it should not be necessary
to spray again now. The next

pink bud stage. This later spray
would be for the control of
brown rot.
In home orchards where small
equipment is used, the spray
coverage is less thorough, and
in order to get protection against
curl leaf it is desirable to spray
once in the fall and again in the
spring. If this spring spray has
not yet been applied, it should

kipper of the freighter Rachel Jackson, is placed in an ambulance
at New York. The ship, its superstructure and steering gear
smashed by an Atlantic storm, limped into port with the pain
wracked skipper still in command. He bad refused to quit his
ship, and although bedfast with a broken ankle and other injuries,
continued to direct his ship and crew into safe harbor.

used. There is some danger that
the lime sulfur will kill back
the twigs, so unless a scale prob

sirable to stick with one of the

is customary
for them to
make the final
decisions about
all matters re
lating to the
wedding. But
it is considered
courteous for
them to con
suit the grooms
family and get

decisions are made. Then, if
there are differences of opinion,
the usual thing is to try to iron
them out to the satisfaction of
all concerned.
If the problem related only to
the wedding itself, I would ad
vise you to forget about it and
not be concerned if your future
daughter-in-law's parents want
to do things in their own way.
But their possessive attitude is
not likely to stop with the wed
ding. . The chances are that they will
try to run the young people's
lives later just as they are try
ing to do now. If your son has
any backbone, he will eventual
ly resent their domination. He
will feel that he wants to be
the head of his own home and
not have long-listance control
coming from the home of his
in-laws.
Interfere for His Sake
Naturally you do not want
to make things difficult for your
son at this time and interfere.
But, for the sake of your son's
future happiness, I think you
would make a mistake to sit
back now and let them run the
whole show.
Through sincere and genuine
interest, you can ask your son's
fiancee's parents about the
plans they are making and then
express your opinions or offer
suggestions. If this is done in
a kindly, helpful, non-critical
manner, they certainly cannot
take offense.
It will, however, show them
from the start that you are not
willing to sit by and allow them
to dominate. Furthermore, it
may give your son the cour
age to express his opinions and
preferences about matters which,
up to now, he felt helpless about
questioning.

returning to Korea at his own
request. He says he can't stand

Klamath Falls, (U.R) Two
young aerial hunters arrived in
Klamath Falls safely Sunday aft
er their light plane was wrecked
Saturday when they attempted
to get a good shot at a coyote.
Doyle Haskins, 22, pilot, and
Gene Hill, 23, both of Merrill,
Ore., . were found by searchers
in an unused quonset hut 10
miles from where theri plane
had flopped over in the snow in
the upper Klamath lake marshes.
The pair told the search party
they brought the plane too low
