Charges President Mistaken

mittee said Saturday President
Truman was "utterly mistaken"
when he charged that opponents
of his plan to shake up the Inter
nal Revenue Bureau put political
patronake ahead of public serv
ice. The North Carolina Demo
crat's reaction to Mr. Truman's
statement was fairly calm. Some
of his colleagues called the Pres
ident's remark "insulting" and
"intemperate."
"Hurt Chances"
They said Mr. Truman had
hurt the chances of his program
to replace the 64 politically- ap
pointed tax collectors with ,25
collectors under civil service.
Mr. Truman also was rapped
for ordering federal agencies not
to give information to a House
judiciary subcommittee investi
gating the Justice Department.

day that the group was taking
a "dragnet approach" which
would "seriously interfere" with
government business.

National Guard Units
Slated for California

Saturday.
They are the 184th AAA oper
ations detachment of San Fran
cisco, now stationed in West Ger
many; the 250th group head
quarters and headquarters .bat
tery of San Francisco, now at
Fort Baker in San Francisco;
and the 186th AAA operations
detachment of Long Beach, also
at Fort Baker.
All three have been in federal
service since the fall of 1950,
Jones said. They will be return
ed to their home armories.

- The House has approved the
Internal Revenue reorganization
plan which will go into effect
automatically next Friday un
less the Senate votes it down. A
resolution to throw out the plan
is scheduled to come, up in the
Senate Wednesday. Hoey was
one of trie 7 to 5 majority of the
Senate Government Operations
committee which voted this week
to kill the plan.
California Man Held
In Bayonet Killing .
San Pedro U.R) Tom Green,
28, was held on a murder charge
Saturday involving the death of
John D. Burton, 32, with a war
souvenir bayonet.
Police said Green, Burton's
nephew, told them he stabbed
his uncle in the heart with the
bayonet after he tried to subdue
Burton vhen he attempted to
force his attentions on Green's
wife, Margaret.

Winner of Legion
Speech Contest
Richard Dickenson, Medford
high school senior, Saturday won
the finals of the American Le
gion's southern Oregon district
oratorical contest. He is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Dickenson,

Winning the event, which was
held at the Medford senior high
school auditorium, entitled the
boy to enter the region state
semi-finals. Time and place of
this event had not been set.
The Josephine and Klamath
champiens tied for second place
in the competition here Satur
day. They were Kathy Phillips,
of Illinois Valley high school,
and Robert Chidester, of Klam
ath Union high school.
Also entered in the Saturday
competition was Don Neibauer,
Lake county champion, repre
senting Lakeview high school. ,
The students gave prepared
talks on "The Constitution of the
United States" and spoke extem
poraneously on "The Rights of
the President."
Judges of the competition were

George Bolster, Medford; H. E.
Bergstrom, Lakeview; John O.
Walker, Medford; Dr. Arthur

Sound of Barking Dog Saves Family from Gas
Chicago (U.R) The barking
of a terrier named Clover early
Saturday saved the lives of sev
en persons.
The dog's barking awoke Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Jones, whe
found five other members oi
the family overcome by coal
gas fumes seeping through their
basement apartment.
Firemen with inhalators and
oxygen revived the Jones' three
children, Mrs. Jones' sister anc
ner infant daughter.

Washington Strikes Back
In Tidelands Oil Battle
Olympia (U.R) Gov. Arthur
B. Langlie Saturday struck back
at the federal government for
its claim to the three-mile strip
of submerged oil lands along
the Washington coast.
In a strongly worded letter to
Secretary of the Interior Oscar
Chapman, Langlie told him the
federal government's effort to
"grab Washington's tidelands"
was in violation of the Washing
ton state constitution.
Reply to Chapman
Langlie' letter replied to one
he received from Chapman about
a week ago. At that time the
secretary of interior informed
the Washington governor:
"Under the doctrine of the
cases against California, Lou
isiana and Texas, the United
States believes and asserts that
the submerged area along the
coast line of the state of Wash
ington ... is subject to the full
domination and power of the
United States."
Advises Against Permits
Chapman advised the state to
issue no more oil and gas per
mits on its tidelands, which 'have
produced favorable signs recent
ly of commercial oil and gas
quantities. Furthermore, Chap
man told the state oil and gas
permits already issued were to
be considered null and void.
"This is the latest and most
drastic expression of government
by edict," Langlie said.
Fishermen File Suit
For Alleged Violations

Fishermen's union suit asking
$3,520 for alleged contract vio
lations by John 'and Nicholas
Bez was on file in U.S. District
court here Saturday.
The AFU charges that the
Bez brothers' freezer boat, Tony
B, bought $4,800 worth of fish'
from sources other than union
gillnetters attached to the boat,
which was in Bristol Bay waters.
The union also charges the
Bez brothers with failing to pay
the union men one-third pur
chase price called for in the con
tract, and that the men were
not provided first-class transpor
tation from and back to Seattle.
