Smallpox Victim
Reported on Ship
Seattle U.E) Twenty-two
persons, including seven children
who came in contact with a
young smallpox victim aboard
the Navy transport G. H. B. Free
man, were quarantined at Fort
Lewis Saturday shortly after the
vessel docked here.
Authorities said seven children
came in contact with the child
who was reported to be recov
ering from the disease. The sev
en children, and their families
were quarantined.
The vessel docked at 8 a.m.
with 1,139 passengers. Including
813 Army personnel, aboard.
The ship came from Japan.
Navy and civilian health .offi
cers boarded the Freeman at
Port Angeles, to investigate the
smallpox case. The victim was
reported to be the baby of a Jap
anese war bride.

America's atomic bombing for
ces caused the Russians to mass
produce the MIG-15 jet inter
ceptor, which they now are
throwing into the Korean war
in mounting numbers.
Military experts say the evi
dence is plain that the Mikoyan
Gurevich design was turned out
originally to defend Russia
against attack by high-flying
bombers. It is a purely defensive
airplane with a flight endur
ance of about 45 minutes. Its
armament is slow-firing cannon,
suited to fighting bombers rath
er than fighter planes like the
F-86. Its rate of climb is ex
tremely high for a plane of its
vintage, intended to get it to
bomber altitude on short notice.
Awareness Evident
Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, Air
Force chief of staff, recently
told the United Press:
"The fact that the Soviets
should have invested so heavily
in the production of this par
ticular airplane is evidence of
the Soviet Union's awareness of
the power of our Strategic Air
Command."
The extent of the Russian in
vestment is indicated by the
numbers shifted from European
Russia to Manchuria apparent
ly more than 1,300 since No
vember, 1950. The Reds have
900 MIGs available in Man
churia today. In the past, 230
were shot down. And, if Amer
ican experience is a guide, an
other 230 MIGs have been lost
through non-combat causes.

Tanks, Bombers
In Hanoi Fight

French troops have thrown
tanks and dive-bombers against
Communist rebels in positions
only 20 miles from Hanoi, it
was announced Saturday.
French forces attacked the
rebels Friday, a general head
quarters communique said.
Near French Bastion
The fighting took place in the
vicinity of Vinyen, northwest
of ' the city, the great French
bastion in the north.
Heavy artillery fire helped
planes, tanks and troops to pin
down two battalions of the Viet
Minn rebel troops, the com
munique said.
No Explanation
There was no explanation how
rebels in apparent big numbers
managed to penetrate so close to
Hanoi.
Only two weeks ago, the de
fense perimeter of Hanoi was
tightened after the French with
drawal from the inland strong
hold of Hoa Binh.

Tryouts for the Footlighters
civic theater group's next pro
duction will be conducted to
night and Monday at 7:30 p.m.
in the new little theater at the
county fairgrounds. Anyone in
the vicinity interested in taking
part in the play or its production
is invited to attend.
The play selected is "Goodbye
My Fancy," a college alumnus
story, which calls for "under
grads," "grads," and 'ex-grads."
Men and women of all ages,
twenty in all, will be needed for
the cast.
Bob Stedman, senior high
school drama coach, will direct.
Production dates are set tenta
tively for mid-April.
The regular business meeting
of the Footlighters will be held
Tuesday, March 11, at 8 p.m.

the organization should attend,
officers said. Refreshments will
be served.
