of pregnancy toxemia, still

genital defects are matters be
yond their control.
Recent research shows that
such catastrophes are often due
to hormonal disturbances, infec
tions or other unfavorable condi
tions attending pregnancy. Fur
ther clinical evidence shows that
these conditions frequently re
sult from poor nutrition, and
that correction of this with a
really good diet can reduce sub
stantially the incidence of these
tragedies.

Diet Helps Birth
Dr. Tompkins initial report
indicated that vitamin supple
mentation and high-protein diet
had a marked effect in prevent
ing premature birth, especially
among the underweight women.
Less than 9 per cent of the un
derweight women given supple
ments delivered prematurely, as
against 22 per cent in the con
trol group of underweight moth
ers. Dr. Tompkins project is the
most intensive in more than a
decade of research on nutrition
in pregnancy, which dates back
to the discovery in 1941 of the
connection between congenital
blindness and deafness and Ger
man measles. This opened the
way to explore what other ex
ternal factors might exert a role
in tragic "pregnancies and stimu

ing the importance of nutrition
in healthy childbirth.

tional caloric intake was re

Interesting Study
Studies showed that improved
diet reduced sharply the number
of stillbirths and neonatal deaths.
In Wales stillbirths fell 35 per
cent and newborn deaths, half of
which are due to prematurity
and congenital defects, were cut
nearly as much in the first two
years of rationing. A study of
20,000 women showed ' a drop
in stillbirths and infant mortali
ty when they received extra
milk during pregnancy, a re
duction especially sharp in se
lected groups that received B
vitamin or vitamin A and D
supplements.
The opposite picture appeared
during the siege of Leningrad.
Russian physicians discovered
that starvation made women
temporarily infertile. During the
latter part of the siege the num
ber of pregnancies fell by more
than 80 per cent. During the
first six months of the siege, the
stillbirth rate rose to twice nor
mal, the percentage of prema
ture births mounted to 41.2 per
cent and newborn mortality
went up to 21.2 per cent among
women who had conceived be
fore the siege.
In 1943 a study of 216 preg
nant women at Boston Lying-in
Hospital showed the close rela
tion between the mother's diet
and the condition of her infant
Ninety - four per cent of the
babies born to mothers with ex

by only 9 per cent of the infants
of mothers with poor diets.

Insect Control System Studied at University
Riverside, Calif. U.PJ A 3,-
000-year-old system of insect con
trol is under study here at the
University of California experi
ment station. The system is based
on pest-eating ants.
Dr. Stanley E. Flanders is plan
ning tests on rearing of useful
ant colonies that can be moved
around as apiculturists do bees.
The colonies would be turned
loose on insect infestations in
fruits and grains.
It's not as simple as it sounds,
however.
The entomologist explained
that only some ants have the
right habits and it will take a lot
of careful study to learn to con
trol them.
The common Argentine ant
that plagues California house-
and walk right into it.
The tub has a knee-high leak
proof door in its side. The door
will neither open nor close as
long as there's even a cupful of
water in the tub.
It took the two men nine
months of spare-time to devise
the tub. The "brains" is a cylin-der-and-float
arrangement which
keeps the door locked when"
there's water in the tub.
