Luxury Liner Makes
First 'Diaper Run'
Seattle (U.R) The former
luxury liner La Guardia arrived
here Wednesday with military
dependents from the Far East on
her first "diaper run."
The La Guardia formerly was
operated by the American Ex
port Lines as a holiday cruise
ship to the Mediterranean.
American Export will continue
to operate the vessel under the
banner of the Military Sea
Transportation Service.

back to the office I rang him up.
"The only people who want
to see me," he said, "are folks
who are mad at somebody they
think have duped the govern
ment. I hear about mink coats,
deep freezes, and the like. 1
haven't been around here, long,
so I feel it is better to keep to
myself.
"I even sneak out and eat lunch
in my hotel room. Of course, I
have been invited out, but I do
not wish to expose myself to any
pressure. That makes me lonely
and that makes this a lonely
town so far as I am concerned.

Not Hard To Sneak Out
It isn't hard for Morris to
sneak out.
As of now he is working in
what you might call a two-floor
empty hall in the old Washington
Post Building, which the govern
ment has taken over.
There was a small flurry
among some 20 or so girls fuss
ing over questionnaires which
will make a very "thorough
search" into the incomes ' of
about 25,000 job holders.
While the girls were busy and
couldn't be bothered and likely
couldn't answer any questions
anyhow, a United Press photog
rapher and I took a little ele
vator up to floor No. 2, Morris'
own floor.
Porter Asleep
The man, as I said, was clos
eted. But in a large room, which
used to house the sports depart
ment of the Post sat a Negro
porter, his hat cocked to -one
side, feet on desk, sound asleep.
He could be excused. He had
nothing else to do at this point.
Other workers were lugging
in new furniture, typewriters,
telephones, and sundry equip
ment. Eventually, Morris hopes to
have as many as 150 to 180
helpers in the place and is mak
ing room for them right now. It
all takes time.

gon Roundtable is the name se
lected for the new YMCA group
recently formed on the Southern
Oregon college campus, it was
announced today by Ann Bark
er, "Klamath Falls, secretary
treasurer of the organization.
Twenty members met at a
Tuesday luncheon and chose as
advisers to the club Dr. Arthur
Kreisman, associate professor of
English; Marion E. Ady, associ
ate professor of art, and Eugene
Bowman, associate professor of
mathematics.
The Roundtable will meet
weekly during spring quarter,
probably in the evenings at Su
sanne Homes hall, Miss Barker
reported. Topics of discussion
will be selected at another lun
cheon meeting planned next
Tuesday.
Police Officers Hear
Public Relations Talks
Some 40 police officers from
Rogue River valley communities
gathered at the Medford ' city
hall yesterday for another in a
series of training meetings held
under trie auspices of the League
of Oregon Cities.
Clyde Warren, chief of police
at Salem, conducted the school,
which was devoted to a review
of police public relations. He
emphasized courtesy and service
as necessary for police officers.
Also speaking briefly to the
officers on the same subject were
Don Lane, secretary and man
ager of the Jackson County
Chamber of Commerce, and Eric
Allen Jr., city editor of The Mail
Tribune.

Three Children
Hanged by Belts;
Mother Kills Self

Detectives cried when they saw
the bodies of three small chil
dren hanging from cowboy belts
fastened to a fourposter bed, a
police official 'said Thursday.
Investigators said the-children
were killed late Wednesday by
their young mother, who then
climbed up to her attic and
hanged herself above a clutter
of dolls, toy trains and teddy
bears.
Mrs. Frank J. Klemm Sr., 30,
left two suicide notes, but police
declined to discuss their contents.
Mrs. Klemm's husband, who re
turned home from work after the
triple murder and suicide, said
she h'ad been despondent.
Detective Robert Rofheart said
each child was hanged from a
different post on the bed.
Italian Studies
American's Proposal
'Empoli, Italy (U.R) Frances
ca Castellani, pretty 26-year-old
dressmaker, was undecided
Thursday about the telephoned
proposal of marriage she re
ceived last week from Harold
Samu of Seattle.
Francesca's mother said it was
the second proposal the girl had
received from Samu, who met
her while he was .a 5th Army
soldier in Italy during the war.
The first proposal came by mail
last year.
"My daughter still does not
know what to say," the mother
said. -.
"Marriage is a serious thing.
She wants to be certain that he !
is certain before she makes up I
her mind." !
