Time Running Out for Mac
To Take Name Off Ballot
Salem (U.R) Time is running
out on Gen. Douglas MacAr
thur's chances of having his
name removed from the Oregon
primary ballot as candidate for
the Republican nomination for
president.
Attorney General George
Neuner has ruled that his name
must remain on, under a ruling
of Oregon law made by the
State Supreme Court In 1916,
although MacArthur has per
sonally requested that his name
be withdrawn.
Court Order Necessary
Neuner said only a court or
der could get MacArthur's name
off the ballot, and there, too,
time is running out.
The deadline for filing for
office in Oregon is next Friday,
March 7. The State Election
Bureau must mail a certifica
tion of ballot information to
each of Oregon's 36 counties
by March 15.
March 21 Deadline
After that a court could order
a candidate's name off the ballot
until the ballots are printed by
each county, or up to March 21.
Even after that a court could
order printed ballots destroyed
and new ones printed up to five
days before the election in this
case May 16, the day of Ore
gon's primary. But Dave O'Hara,
head of the State Election Bu
reau told the United Press Wed
nesday that no such order has
ever been made in Oregon.
Five days before the election,
county clerks must turn over
all ballots printed and all other
election equipment and supplies
for polling places to the sheriffs
for delivery to officials of elec
tion boards. And once that is
done, not even a court could
order the name of a candidate
removed or ballots destroyed.

said he wonders about all those

4 tbips. lemon juice
In mix in g bowl, beat egg whites

To yolks, slowly add sugar,
flour, then milk and lemon
juice, beating until well mixed
(batter gets very thin).
Fold-stir in egg whites until
they become tiny white puffs
in the batter.

in very hot oven (450 F.)
about 7 minutes. Cool on

Blend 12 drops food color

well combined.

Legislation Urged
. Detroit (U.R) An insurance
official ' says al communities
should toughen up their pedes
trian control laws because pedes
trians are responsible for many
automobile accidents.
Walter E. Otto, president of
the Michigan Mutual Liability
company, says many pedestrians
are careless or reckless.
"They cross against red lights,
step from between parked cars,
or without waiting for a reason
able traffic opening," Otto says.
"Pedestrian control legislation,
adequately enforced, is the only
answer."
Blood Affected in Animals Exposed To Atom Radiation
Los Angeles (U.R) Atomic
bomb field tests have proved
that an iron-bearing protein is
released into the blood streams
of animals exposed to atomic
radiation, sometimes causing in
ternal hemorrhaging, it was dis
closed Wednesday.
The discovery first was made
by Drs. Thomas J. Haley and
Richard F. Filey of the atomic
energy project of the University
of California at Los Angeles
Medical Center in 1951.
Rati, Dogs Affected
They discovered that the pro
tein, called ferritin, was released
in the blood streams of rats
exposed to x-ray radiation.
Identical effects were found
in dogs exposed to atom bomb
explosions, they revealed.
, Haley said the radiation
caused paralysis of the peripher
al vascular blood circulation,
causing the liver to release ab
normal amounts of ferritin,
which is associated with the
iron transport system in the
body. '
