Retired Circuit Judge Has
Collection of Odd Wills

meister, retired circuit judge,
pursuing a hobby of 35 years,
has built up one of the largest
collections of odd wills from all
over the world.
One of Hoffmeister's favorites
is that of Herman Oberweiss of
Anderson County, Texas. ,
"First thing 1 want done,'
Oberweiss wrote, "I don't want
my brother Oscar get a damn
thing I got. He is a mumser and
he done me out of $400 14 years
since."
The former judge said Benja
min Franklin left a 40-page will
and several pages are extremely
interesting, such as his comment
on inherited wealth:
"It is my opinion, that the
person who receives an estate
from his ancestors is under
some kind of obligation to trans
mit the same to their posterity;
this obligation does not lie on
me, who never inherited a shill
ing from any ancestor or rela
tive."
Young Estate Involved
Whe.n Brigham Young died
on Aug.. 29, 1877, he left an es
tate of $2,500,000 in trust for
his families. The families were
divided into classes. At the time
of his death, he had 18 living
wives and three deceased. There
were 48 children and one adopt
ed child. The estate was divided
into 19 different parts.
In October of 1926 a Canadian,
Charles Vance. Miller, died and
left his wish that $500,000 be
paid from his estate to the Tor
onto woman who bore the most
children in the last 10 years after
his death. The Ontario Supreme
Court 'in January of 1938 gave
the prize to four women, each
the mother of nine eligible children.
Rockwell Sayre of Chicago re
versed the order of leaving
money to animals when he speci
fied in his will that his execu
tors should buy 150 boxes of
candy and ship them to 150 per
sons whom Sayre listed as his
"fellow warriors in the world
war against cats."
Bitter to End
In Campsie, Australia, a man
whose wife would never let him
get the last word finally got it

woman, she left an $l,800-a-year
income from her estate to Mrs.
Jeanette Paterson" Wallace of
Philadelphia, who was Mrs.
Meillier's husband's "other
wife."

New Cooling Method Will
Speed Defense Production
Pittsburgh (U.R) Hi-Jet, a rev-1 is generated, friction is reduced

is hoped may double the nation's
metal cutting capacity and speed
up defense production, has been
announced here.
Invented by J. R. S. Pigott, di
rector of engineering reaserch of
the Gulf Research & Develop
ment Co., Hi-Jet combines a sys
tem of small high-speed jets of
oil with a special lubricant. It
cools the cutting tool from below
rather than from above the cut
as in the present overhead flood
method of cooling and lubricat
ing.
Through the use of the new
cutting method and special cut
ting oil, tool life and cutting
speeds are increased greatly.
These improvements can be real
ized without major changes in
existing equipment and at mod
erate cast.
The new system1 consists of a
jet, or series of jets depending
upon the depth of the cut, a
pump and compressor capable of
producing 400 pounds of pres
sure per square inch, and flexible
tubing. It can be adapted to most
turning operations using single
point cutting tools and in many
cases can be installed in a few
hours.
Something New
Although it represents a radi
cal departure from present meth
ods, the operation of Hi-Jet is
surprisingly simple. -
Streams of specially refined oil
are forced through a jet opening
181000ths of an inch in diame
ter by 400 pounds (per square
inch) pressure and directed to
ward the exacf point of contact
between the cutting tool edge
and the work.

countered in the overhead flow
method of cutting.
Increased heat dissipation, how-,
ever, results in a great deal more
smoke. To quench the smoke,
twin shower heads are . placed
above and below the cutting sur
face. These shower heads are
adabtaple to available overhead
flood equipment. This smoke
quenching attachment sDravs the
same type of oil used in the lubri
cation and cooling system in a
thin curtain rather than in a
steady flow, but in no way in
fluences the operation of Hi-Jet.
Tests Tell story
Dr. Pigott reported that more
than 600 tests have been con
ducted with Hi-Jet on metals
ranging from SA 1020 to titan
ium. Current tests are being
made under actual shop condi
tions in plants at Pittsburgh, De
troit and Cleveland, O.
Tests run at normal cutting
speeds showed an improvement
in cutting tool life from 3 to 5
times on carbide tools and from
6 to 12 times on high-speed tools.
At above-normal speeds, even
greater ratios of improvement
were noted, while tests run at
below normal speeds resulted in
.higher cutting rates without sac
rifice of tool life. -

Miss Laura- Phillips, head of
the English department of the
city schools, and a faculty mem
ber here since 1936, has resigned
from her position to accept a job
with the Binford and Mort pub
lishing firm in Portland, it was
reported today by the city
schools office.
Mrs. L. C. Taylor, formerly
head of the English department,
has again been named to fill the
position.

had a business volume of $900,-
000 of which 70 per cent was
in feeds and fertilizers, 20 per
cent in petroleum supplies, and
the remainder in miscellaneous
farmer's supplies. Weaver also
explained the methods of pur
chase by Co-op members.
