for millions of picture-goers to

In "Wuthering Heights" it
popped up on a tombstone. Cary
Grant walked by a store window
labeled "L Sindler & Son, rare
coins and stamps," in a scene of
"The Bishop's Wife." And in
"My Foolish Heart," Susan Hay
ward and Dana Andrews pas
sionately clinched before a bill
board labeled "Try Sindler's
Soft Drink."
Hollywood Legend
By now his trademark is a
Hollywood legend.
"Everybody looks for my
name in Goldwyn movies,." says
the white-haired prop man. "The
extras come on the set and say,
'Irving, we don't see your name
here. I tell "em not to worry.
I always figure a way to get
it in."
Sindler first "starred" his
name on the screen back in
1925. He painted a sign, "I.
Sindler, buttons, buckles and
braids," for a set of a building
in "Little Annie Rooney." Usu
ally prop men paint fictitious
names on movie signs so they
won't be sued for invasion of
privacy. Sindler declared it
would be easier and more fun
to use his own.
Heard of Trademark
Later he heard of director
Alfred Hitchcok's trademark of
appearing in his pictures, so
Sindler became the Hitchcock of
the property men.
A label on a Singer sewing
machine in "North Star" be
came Sindler. In "The Kid From
Brooklyn," actors walked down
a street labeled, "Sindler Ave."
Sindler didn't even work on
"The Best Years of Our Lives."
but a pal loyally painted on a
store window "Sindler & Son,
furniture."

Getting his name into a pic
ture involved considerable skill,
says Sindler.
"I read the script and wait
for a good spot," he explains.
"I pick a scene with a lot of
dialogue so it can't be cut, and
a close-up so the name will
show.
Currently he's plotting how
to work his name into Goldwyn's
latest, "Hans Christian Ander
sen." He thinks he may print
it on a theatrical bulletin board
in a back-stage scene.
"For a While the director,
Charles Vidor, said all the signs
would be in Danish and I was
worried, but they're back in
English now," the prop man
says.
Sehrunk Reluctant To
Seek Secretary Post

county Sheriff Terry Sehrunk
said Tuesday he was reluctant
to leave his present job to run for
secretary of state because "I
am in the midst of a lot of unfin
ished work."
Democratic State Chairman
Howard Morgan said in Pendle
ton Sunday there was a feeling
among some Democrats that
Sehrunk should run for the post
now held by Earl Newbry, a Re
publican. Sehrunk said he felt, honored
by the suggestion but that he
felt a moral obligation to finish
his present job.

The Public Relations Com
mittee of the Dairy Council of
Canada asserts that there is
no such thing as "cheese-type
food" permitted in Canada al
though these are common in
the United States. The Com
mittee complains that many
readers in Canada will interpret
my remark as applying to Ca
nadian process cheese ... ,
In the first place, if no such
thing as cheese-type food is per
mitted in Canada, how could
my remarks apply to it? In the
next place I haven't any idea
what Canadian process, cheese
is, so I could hardly have intend
ed to give Canadian readers
a wrong opinion of Canadian
process or any other cheese.
Finally, it seems to me that
the Public Relations Committee
of the. Dairy Council of Canada
needs a change of spectacles. In
the article I said everything
good about cheese that I could
think of, closing with this:
No other item anywhere
near as good to eat better de
serves the designation "health
food."
Frankly I don't know- what
' Canadian process cheese" is all
cheese and not a mixture, blend,
concoction or product fabricated
of divers items including a dash
of cheese.
I do hope that "Canadian pro
cess" means a method or way
of making cheese. If it turns out
to be just a Canadian twist to
the Yankee trick of selling un
wary customers a concoction
that looks, smells or tastes like
cheese, I hope the Public Rela
tions Committee of the National
Dairy Council of Canada may be
sentenced to eat some of the
stuff every day for ninety days.
I'm not at all vindictive, but
