The pre-teen set makes fash
ion news, this Spring, with a
wealth of exciting designs that
pay special attention to their
very young figures, and fabric
textures that are especially note
worthy for their nubby, ribby
and popcorny outlooks.
Shepherdess dresses. Empire
silhouettes, princess lines and
snug-top, full-skirted fashions
all combine to create very young
figure interest. While texture
appealing fabrics run the gamut
from papery rayon to ribbed
rayon suitings and any number
of variations on tweed.
Beneath it all are gaily pat
terned linings, and crisp, color
ful petticoats that help empha
size already full skirts.
Lighter Colors
In Gloves Noted
Lighter weights, lighter colors
'and new style details are the key
notes of men's gloves designed
for Spring '52.
Airy weight capeskins, soft
suedes and leather and nylon
combinations carry out the em
phasis on lightweight gloves for
Spring. These are featured in
such light-mannered tones as
grey, leather shades, sand, rust
and navy.
Bold stitching, deep stitched
hems, whip stitching, side vents
and side walls offer many Spring
'52 gloves eye-catching new style
effects.
Shepherdess-type frocks are
pretty to see dressed-up with
pert apron and corselet effects,
scooped-out necklines, puffed
sleeves and lacings and braid ac
cents. Typical is a dress that
achieves both shepherdess and
fabric texture interest by means
of a glazed pique corselet and
peplum over multi-color striped
cotton.
Dresses and coats featured in
the high-raising midriff Empire
silhouette appear in fabrics to
match the occasion. Dresses, for
example, are madein gala fab
rics like taffetized chambray and
pure taffeta for dress-up, and in
a variety of gaily printed cottons
for school hours. While coats are
offered for "Sunday Best" in
fabrics like checked worsted,
and in fleece for more casual
wear.
The princess style coats, that
Sunday appeal, are more appeal
ing than ever, this Spring, with
extra wide skirts often accented
by padded hiplines and side-entry
hip pockets.
Keynote of young suits and
the many convertible fashions
on hand for the pre-teen's Spring
wardrobe are billowing skirts
and snug-fitting tops. Suit jack
ets are usually brief and skirt
fullness is often emphasized -by
all-around pleats or flouncy pet
ticoats. Convertibles appear in dress
es with removable capelets,
suits that sometimes include two
skirts and a reversible weskit

It's a wide open fashion sea
son for new shoes with the
shape and height of heels as
suming a greater than ever 'im
portance. For, in every instance,
new footwear is designed, and
made in fabrics and colors, to
complement Spring fashion's
great sweep and width of hem
lines, molded midriffs above
nipped-in waistlines and very
brief coats.
Pumps, that team so well with
undulating hemlines, open up.
They have closed backs and open
toes. Outlines are daintily shell
ed. And throat-lines and vamps
are interesting to see.
To effectively pair with mold
ed midriffs andjiipped-in waist
lines, there is the new "corset"
shoe. This slips on the foot like
a girdle and adjusts without
buckles. Sometimes it has a
closed toe and open back. Some
times it is very bare with all
five toes showing, and a banded
vamp.
Sandals, too, in keeping with
Spring s bare outlook, show off
the foot to a maximum. For day
time or after-five, the sandal is
newest when it is amost in
visible, designed with a wide or
narrow Instep band that lends
support as well as new fashion
appeal.
A flattering variety of designs,
meant to cater to the frothy
petticoats shown for Spring,
gives heels, on every type of
shoe, a greater than ever im
portance. Every heel height is on
hand with a special emphasis
on. the slimmer mid-heights ap
pearing in shapes that are curv
ed in a gentle, pretty manner.
Fabrics and leathers, used for
Spring shoes, are also designed
to complement or effectively
contrast with new fashions. The
nubby, dobby, slubby and pop
corn textures seen in newest
fashions, are available in shoes
too. While the smooth surfaced
shoe, highly polished and silky
looking, is used to contrast with
exaggerated fabric textures.
Mesh, linen, lace, shantung
and cotton are chief of the
texture-some fabrics utilized for
Spring shoes. In many instances,
texture is added or emphasized
by trims like reptile leathers.
FOR YOUR CHOICE
There are two basic style cate
gories in men's neckwear, bows
and four-in-hands. But within
these "two categories there are
as many as fifty different styles.
Average length of a tie is from
forty-seven to fifty-four inches.
Neckwear is more important
than ever in the Spring fashion
picture with the revival of col
ored shirts in stripes, checks and
plaids for. business wear.
Coordinating color . and pat
tern in suits, shirts and ties poses
a new problem for the average
shopper. What to wear with what
is the question.'
Some basic rules in ensem-
bling fancy shirts and suits with
ties as the connecting link are
pointed out by the Men's Tie
Foundation.
The suit is the basic unit of a
wardrobe. Use it as a guide in
selecting shirts and ties.
Fancy shirt colors can be
matched or contrasted to the
suit. If the shirt is matched to
the suit color (blue shirt, blue
suit) pick the tie color to con
trast or highlight the suit- and
shirt color. If the shirt is con-
tr.asted (grey shirt, blue suit)
pick up the suit color as the
principal color accent in the tie.
Try to avoid small patterned
ties with checked shirts, the
Foundations suggests. They tend
to give too "busy" an appearance
to a checked shirt. Wear, in
stead, wide stripes. An off cen
ter pattern, under the knot pat
terns, panels with strong ver
tical lines complement -the
check. i
A striped tie can be worn with
as well as the usual jacket, and
jumper dresses that come com
plete with little close-fitting
jackets, frothy blouses and crisp
under-petticoats. .

fancy shirting patterns, lends it
self perfectly to bold, paneled
or fancy neckwear. But care
should be taken not to mix
stripes with plaids. There is too
much conflict of crossed lines
of design.

hats are pared all around to help
provide a suitable complement
to the natural silhouette. While
the popularity of sport hats and
caps seems to be keeping steady
pace with the popularity of
wearing separates for most ev
ery occasion.
Narrowed brims and lower
crowns come together to help
achieve "a natural, understated
appearance in dress hats. In
some instances, a tiny feather
cluster is tucked into the narrow
band of the hat for a height
ened casual effect. While lighter
shades, in the brown, tan and
grey families, also play an im
portant role in the over-all sub
dued appearance.
The Tyrolean-type hat retains
major prominence among Spring
'52 sport hats. With both rough
and smooth fabric textures mak
ing news in latest designs. A typ
ical example of new Tyrolean
texture interest is the model
with a rough suede finish and
a suede leather band plus the
byword of the Tyrolean, a juan
ty brush feather.
Caps are, for the most part,
even bolder than those featured
for past seasons. They offer
larger check patterns and are
available in such rough hewn
fabrics as a variety of tweeds
and corduroys, in solid tones,
that can be selected to match
or contrast with the rest of
sports outfit.
