Australia to the Washington,
D.C., zoo. Miss North thinks that
the fact Fox recently made
"Kangaroo" in Australia has
something to do with this, too.

Veterans who sell their homes
and let the purchasers assume
the 4 per cent GI loans remain
personally responsible for the
payment of the loan, it was an
nounced today by the Veterans
Administration.
The VA warned that World
War II veterans should not sell
their property without making
certain their interests are pro
tected. The best way to do that,
the VA said, is to have the pur
chaser pay cash or arrange for a
loan in his own name.
The VA conceded that proper
ty is more easily sold with the
favorable 4 per cent GI mort
gage remaining in effect a fac
tor that should influence the
aelling price. However, ' it was

on Terry Schrunk, Multnomah
county sheriff, to run against
Earl Newbry, incumbent Repub
lican, for secretary of state. .
"We are confident that if
Schrunk files, he will be elect
ed," Morgan said.
In Portland, Schrunk admit
ted he was being urged to file
for the state post but said he
felt reluctant to seek a higher
office before completing his
term as sheriff.
As a Democrat, Schrunk rolled
up the largest number of votes
ever recorded in Multnomah
county when he was elected aft
er an interim appointment to
succeed the recalled Mike El

Rogue River
Rogue River Mr.- and Mrs.
J. E. Carton of the Walnut Grove
motel have returned from a
week's visit in Seattle and re
port that mention was mad of
Rogue River on Station KOL
Seattle, last Thursday. They
said Mrs. Carton's brother, Bill
Keene sang, "There's a Tear in
My Eye for You," which he re
cently composed and dedicated
it to them, mentioning they
were visitors from Rogue River.
Another song of Keene's,
"Heading Down the Trail" is to
be published" by the Fiesta Pub
lishing company of Hollywood
and Carton's "Song of the Saws"
for which the Rogue River lum
ber industry furnished inspira
tion, is also ready for publica
tion by- aonther company.
The new class in home nurs
ing started last week with an
enrollment of 17 women. Classes
are held at the Civic club build
ing, Tuesday and Thursdays
from 1 to 3 p. m. under instruc
tion of Jennie Corwin, R. N.
Shelby Gay who resided at
Waller's Old Inn before moving
to Grants Pass recently, . died
February 25. He was born at
Shoal, Ky., and was a veteran of
World War I. He came west for
his health about two years ago.
Mrs. R. E. McNatt, mother of
Mrs. Earl Weaver, arrived Wed
nesday from Casa Grande, Ariz.,
to visit the Weavers. They state
she left home on the spur of the
moment and accompanied a son
who was driving to Oregon and
her arrival was a complete sur
prise to the family.
Mrs. Cassie Golding and Mrs.
Grace Stroud left Friday for a
visit at the Pressley Tryon
ranch at Fort Dick, Calif.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Sheehan
left Thursday for California,
called by the death of Mrs. Shee
han's father.
Mr. and Mrs. Burton Stocking
returned Wednesday from Los
Angeles where they visited Mrs.
Stocking's brother, a niece and
nephew, during the past two
weeks. They were also dinner
guests on Sunday of Mr. and
Mrs. A. G. Sheppard, their
former neighbors on West Evans
creek, who now reside in River,

deer to help save the mystic
tribe.
The natives have been cred
ited with the ability to commu
nicate with each other by mental
telepathy.
There are only 80 families
of Scolt-Lapps left in the wdrld
as the result of the ravages of
two wars on their . original
homeland around Petsamo in
Finland. Since the end of World
War II, the 350 remaining tribes
men have resettled in the far
north of Finland, hundreds of
miles beyond the Arctic circle.
Travelers have reported that
despite the sympathetic efforts
of the Finnish government to
provide them with a suitable vil
lage, the tribe is doomed unless
it receives the 1,000-strong rein
deer herd it needs to feed and
clothe itself.

have their houses less than two
miles apart.
That, according to Toni Hop
kinson, an editor who visited
them Tecently, apparently has
heightened the psychic ability
supposedly latent in all humans.
Hopkinson said he could not
otherwise explain how a Scolt
Lapp hunter suddenly would
start off to meet a friend at a
rendezvous 0 miles away and
meet him there although no ap
parent message had ever been
sent, except perhaps mentally.

Giant Wolves a Menace
One is a gigantic wolf which
raids reindeer herds, then races
back to the safety of his lair
beyond the nearby Russian bor
der. The Scolt-Lapp hunters
are not permitted beyond the
iron curtain and the wolves ap
parently have learned they can
plague the western world from
there with impunity.

paratus of the skunk.

last few days cuts have re
mained dry, so now would be a
good time to prune. Most of the
varieties do best if pruned to
the long cane system rather
than the spur system. If the vines
are un on wires, fivp or siv
canes three to four feet long
should be left. Table grapes al
ready trained to the sDur svstem
can be continued and in this case
10 or 12 3-bud spurs can be left
to each vine.
Walnut pruning is best left
until late ADril or earlv Mav.
Pruning at this season is apt to
result In copious bleeding and
while ' this ia not particularly
detrimental, it should be avoid
ed if possible.
