in 1931 are believed to have to
taled more than $1,200,000,000
or at least $140 million more
than ever before.
The State Unemployment
Compensation commission made
the estimate Friday on the basis
of completed tabulations of em
ployers' reports for the first nine
months of last year.
Record pay rolls in construc
tion, lumber and food proces
sing, all of which increased con
siderably more than the average
over previous highs in 1950,
were mainly responsible for the
new marks. By area, Curry,
Umatilla, Crook, Lane, Coos,
Hood River, Tillamook, Doug
las, Jackson and Wasco coun
ties led the way with gains for
the first three quarters of more
than 20 per cent.

Takes UP Position
Bill Force, a reporter on The
Mail Tribune for nearly four
years, left Saturday to accept a
position with the United Press
in its Portland bureau.
A native of Gold Hill, young
Force is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
H. D. Force. He is a graduate of
the University of Oregon and
served in the infantry for sev
eral years during World War II.
While on the newspaper.
Force did general assignment
reporting, including the city
hall and courthouse "beats."
During the past year, Force was
responsible for editing the Sun
day edition and also did feature
and layout work. ,
In Portland he will be on the
night desk at the UP bureau.
State FOE Officers
Visit Local Lodge
State officers of the Fraternal
Order of .Eagles attended the
meeting of the local lodge at the
regular meeting Thursday. They
were Jack Henry, state presi
dent; C. D. Groves, past presi
dent and director; C. M. Ham
street, president, and John
Beebe. past president, all Klam
ath Falls; Hof Lloyd, state
guard, and Dean A. McConkle,
president, both Grants Pass. In
addition, there were several oth
er out-of-town guests.
Henry spoke on the progress
of the FOE throughout the world.
A class of 10 was initiated dur
ing the evening, and a dance
and refreshments followed the
meeting.
Salem (U.R) Former Gov
John H. Hall of Portland filed
Friday for delegate to the Re
publican national convention
from the state at large." He did
not express a preference for Re
publican nominee for president.
Dentist Announces
Opening of Modern
Office Building
Dr. Milo V. Kubalek yesterday
announced the opening of his
new and modern dental building
at 1320 West Main street. The
new building is believed to be
the only one in Medford design
ed and built for dental use.
The building has 10 rooms
which include two operating
rooms, a research and develop
ment room, prosthetic labora
tory, x-ray room, consultation
office and utility room.
Dr. Kubalek is a 1932 gradu
ate of Northwestern university
where he did post graduate work
in children's dentistry, ortho
dontia and full denture prosthe
sis. Until World War II he prac
ticed dentistry in Chicago.
During the war Dr. Kubalek !
served as navy dental officer and
was discharged a lieutenant com
mander. He served with the 4th
Marine air wing in the Marshall
and Mariana islands as recrui;
training dental officer at Great
Lakes, at the Naval air station
at Kodiak, Alaska, and attended
classes in surgery and prosthetic
dentistry at Bethesda, Md.
Returning to civilian life, he
did research work in dental ma
terials at Northwestern univer
sity. He came west to begin pri
vate practice and after looking
for locations throughout Oregon,
the family decided on Medford
