WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT PYORRHEA!
If a dentist or a uerio-
dontist had the temerity to dis
miss a pyorrhea patient as cured
his or her colleagues would raise
their eyebrows and question the
accuracy of the diagnosis.
I bate to mention it so aorupi
Iy, but I believe all of the mouth
conditions usually ascribed to
pyorrhea are manifestations of
physical deficiencies in prenatal
life, infancy, childhood and
youth.
The degeneration process was
reearded in the oast as atroDhy
(wasting, shrinkage) of gums,
teeth, jaw bone. "
Tr nrncess mav be retarded
or arrested even in mature in
dividuals by correcting the nu
tritional deficiencies not for
weeks or months but from now

.That isn't
much.
In the first
place the very
name pyor
rhea, which
means flow or discharge of pus,
has no specific significance. It
sounds more imposing to say
pyorrhea alveolaris, which
means flow of pus irom tootn
sockets. If there is little or no
evidence of suppuration ( pus-
formation) some dentists use an
other term, such as gingivitis,
which means inflammation of
the gum, and still doesn't identi
fy any specific disease.
Many dentists or dental au
thorities . have set forth their
views of the cause, nature, pre
vention and treatment of so-call
ed pyorrhea, each his own, like
the numerous techniques for
brushing the teeth, leading us a
little farther into the woods and
leaving us no better off than
we were before.
It seems that patients who
seek treatment for pyorrhea
must continue treatment from

Philadelphia Hotel
Burns; 150 Evacuated
Philadelphia (U.PJ More
than 150 persons were evacu
ated safely Friday when a sev
en-alarm fire, largest in the city
in three years, destroyed the
seven-story Clinton hotel in
downtown Philadelphia and
damaged three adjoining four
floor apartment houses.
More than a dozen hotel
guests, trapped on upper floors
by heavy smoke, were rescued
down aerial ladders by fire
men. Some of them had to be
talked out of leaping from upper
windows. Several of the hotel
guests were treated for hys
teria at nearby hospitals.
The million dollar blaze,
which began in a linen closet,
continued out of control five
hours after it first was discovered.

- A National - Production Au
thority official expressed the
"cautious hope" that manufac
turers of . consumer goods will
get a larger allotment of scarce
metals during the second quar
ter of the year than in the first.
He said there has been an
"easing" of the tight supply sit
uation in aluminum and steel in
recent weeks.
No firm ' decisions have yet
been made about relief for civil
ian industry. Officials first want
to make sure that they can meet
all essential demands without
