"Answer The Call"

Each year the month of March is devoted to the annual Ameri
. can Red Cross fund drive. While March is called Red Cross month,
many women of Jackson county devote part of every week the
year around to volunteer Red Cross work. Some have years of
this volunteer service to their credit. They have "answered th
call." -. .
One of these devoted Red Cross workers is Mrs. J. P.
Naumes, (upper left) who is now in her 11th year as a volun
teer in the production and Grey Lady corps of Jackson county
chapter of Red Cross. Women of the Grey Lady corps help to staff
the Red Cross office at the Camp White veterans domiciliary,
and carry on a program of service to the veterans. Mrs. Naumes,
chairman of the corps, is shown here interviewing one of the men
at the domiciliary.
Home nursing classes are being stressed this year by Red
Cross at the request of national civilian defense officials, and
eight new instructors are now being trained. Members of ,the in
structors' class are shown (center left) during one of the training
sessions last week. Left to right qre Mrs. John Heckert; Miss Ger
trude Molloy, Mrs. Noel Davis and Miss Hazel Swayne. Also
taking the class are Mrs. Ruth Amer, Mrs. Margaret McKechnie,
Mrs. Ettie Pair and Miss Eunice Gray. Mrs. Lester Gilman is horn
nursing chairman, and is planning classes which the new in
structors will teach.
Another branch of the Jackson county chapter is Junior Red
, Cross, which has new headquarters in a city building on East
Jackson -street. Young people of the county work at the head
quarters room making articles which are sent to veteran hos
pitals and domiciliates. Entertainment programs are planned for
the Camp White domiciliary members, and with the cooperation
of grade school children throughout the county, articles are col
. lected and packed for overseas shipment. Pictured (lower left)

The county chapter is also proud of its second Grey Lady
' corps, which carries on a program of service to the community.
The idea for such a corps was conceived in this county, and the
, program here is considered most successful. Other chapters are
now copying the idea. Womeij of the corps aid in many ways
such persons as the blind, the underprivileged and the chroni
cally ill. Shown (upper right, left to right) are Mrs. Max Peirce,
co-chairman and Mrs. S. M. Tuttle, chairman of the corps.
The far-reaching Red Cross program also includes aid to ser
vicemen, veterans and their families in times of emergency, re
lief to those stricken during disasters and many other services
on a local, national and international level.
The drive here will open March 10, and already much of the
advance planning has been done. Jack Fitzgerald will again be
chairman for the fund drive, and he will be assisted by scores
of county residents. Shown (lower right, left to right) are Mrs.
Robert A. Shaw, who will be chairman of solicitation for the east
side section of Medford, Mrs. C. H. Pence, staff aide of the chap
ter who will help with the drive, and Mrs. John S. Day, general
chairman of all the service corps of the chapter.
