Cameron Ralston
To Speak Monday
For Dinner Club
Cameron Ralston, a former
director of public forums for
the United States Office of Edu
cation, will speak Monday,
March 3, for Rogue Valley
Knife and Fork club. The din
ner meeting will be at Rogue
Valley Country club beginning
at 6:45 p. m.
The speaker, described as a
former soldier, miner and col
lege professor, will speak on
"The Back Stairs of History."
He was for a time on the fac
ulty of Washington and Jeffer
son university. Later he became
executive secretary of the his
toric Committee of One Hundred
in Chicago, which worked to
free the city from the influence
of gangsters.
Members are asked to make
their dinner reservations with
the secretary, Mrs. O. A. Eden,
not later than Saturday, March 1.

February Meeting Held
By Sams Valley Ladies
Sam's Valley Ladies' club held
the last meeting at the home of
Mrs. G. A. Koellner. Decorations
were in the Washington's birth
day theme, andthe hostess serv
ed refreshments to close the aft
ernoon. Plans were made for a plant
exchange at the next meeting.
Mrs. Robert Galloway took
charge of games, which were
also in the Washington's birth
day theme. Mrs. Lindsey Hous
ton won the prize. An appro
priate song . was sung by the
group.

On Scholastic Roll
Miss- Carol Sams and Miss
Priscilla West, both Medford, are
two of 79 students to receive
S.SO or better to win a place on
the Lewis and Clark college hon
or roll for the fall semester, a
release from the college states.
Miss Sams, sophomore soci

Wedding Last Saturday
Miss Freda Jacobs, whose wed
ding to Buren C. Kennedy was
an event of last Saturday, was
honored at a number of shower
parties before the wedding.
Mrs. Kenneth Keith, the bride's
sister, was one of the hostesses,
inviting friends to her home,

Jacobs was presented with a
shower of gifts for her new
home, and refreshmments were
served.

sweetheart theme, with heart
shaped ices being served.

February Meeting
Shady Cove Lady Lions of
Shady Cove and Trail held their
February meeting at the Shack
in Shady Cove. The vice-president,
Mrs. Ruth Wood, presided.
Mrs. Gus Olson was appointed
secretary to replace Mrs. Doro
thy Francis.
Next meeting will be held at
the home of Mrs. Gus Olsen,
when new projects will be con
sidered. At a meeting of committees
from the Shady Cove-Trail and
Prospect clubs held February
25, plans were made for a joint
meeting March 12 at Prospect
at 7:30 p. m. The Shady Cove
Trail officers will be installed
at that time. ,

Honored by Two Groups
Shady Cove Members of Cub
Scouts, Girl and Boy Scouts of
the Shady Cove vicinity were
honored at a party given by
Steelhead post, Veterans of For
eign Wars and auxility, in the
post home at Shady Cove, Feb
ruary 22.
Several Cubs were presented
merit badges and following pre
sentation of awards Mrs. Rose
Cook, Girl Scout area field di
rector, spoke.
Clifford Hansen, executive of
Crater Lake area, Boy Scouts,
explained the principles of
scouting and what scouting
means for both boys and parents.
A program of music was giv
en by pupils of Mrs. Eve Pren
tice, who were accompanied by
Mrs. Prentice.

Duo-Piano Team Presents
Program for Association

Jackson County Civic Music
association presented a program
by the duo-piano team, Ferrante
and Teicher, February 28 at the
senior high: school auditorium.
The concert was a pleasing ex
ample of the development of in
terest in music not only locally
but throughout the nation. Mr.
Ferrante and Mr. Teicher have
been educated and trained to
play together the best in' music
throughout a wide field and gave
an exciting program in a man
ner that was liked and under
stood. Many people are a bit
skeptical as to piano playing
being a medium of enertainment,
but the early arrival by special
truck of two seven-foot Steinway
grand pianos together with two
chauffeurs and a corps of work
men to set the stage convinced
onlookers that the management
believed that concerts are worth
while and by 7:30 p.m. the audi
torium was well-filled. It seemed
by 8:30 o'clock the membership
of our civic association had ar
rived, though there was still a
quarter-hour to wait before cur
tain time.
So little music has been com
posed for duo-piano that the
artists, from the marvellous
v ealth of piano literature, make
many of their own arrangements
from both the early and "mod
ern classics."
The concert was ultra-modernistic
in .concept, design and pre
sentation. The men play with the
utmost unity, precision, rhythm
and technical skill. They accept
the modern idea that piano play
ing is not pounding, beating and
hitting the piano but a studied
means of eliciting beautiful tone
from instruments for the purpose
of expressing unlimited shades
of meaning through music. To
this end the opening prelude and
the fugue . by Bach seemed to
gain in clarity of design by trans
ferring the themes alternately to
the two instruments. This was
also true of the Saint-Saens "Var
iations on a Theme by Beethov
en." This basic idea prevailed
also in treatment of the modern
istic idiom of Khachaturian, De
bussy and the American idol,
Gershwin.
The audience must have ap
preciated the ' unique and alto
gether fine concert as they de
manded four encores and the
concert was finished off with a
tribute to American patriotism,
"The Stars and Stripes Forever."

home of their teacher, Mrs. J.
C. Hutchins, for a business ses
sion and election of, officers.
Following a buffet supper and
the business meeting, the young
people went as a group to the
NYPS zone rally, held that eve
ning in Ashland Church of the
Nazarene.
Elected to office were presi

Catherine Reid; secretary, Joan
Ward. Committee chairmen are:

backstage after the concert, Fer
rante and Teicher happily auto
graphed scores of programs pre
sented by the junior members of
the association and spoke genial
words of interest to young music
lovers.
From San Diego north , they
gave many concerts and they go
from Medford to Corvallis where
they give their next concert
Thursday night.

will be given Saturday, March
1, by Iva Kitchell, considered
the nation's leading dance sa

Has First Session;
Announce Scores
Camp White First official
session of the new Camp White
Veterans' Bridge club was held
last Thursday at the camp. The
new blub, organized to provide
recreation for men at the domi
ciliary center, will meet each
Thursday night at the camp, and
the third Thursday night of each
month will be devoted to master
point play.
Members of Medford Dupli
cate Bridge club are interested
in the new organization, and it
is expected that there will be
considerable inter-c h a n g e of
players. Paul A Hatton, man
ager of the domiciliary, and
Marvin Kahn, special services
officer, already are members of
the Medford club.
Winners for the north-south
playing positions in the first ses
sion were Mr. Hatton and John
Solheim, first; Mrs. R. J. Con
roy and Mrs. T. J. Fuson, sec
ond; Mrs. W. W. Stevenson and
Roy Pruitt, third.
