a sharp boost in the flow of
Irish-American tourists to the
old country.
The government Is speeding
legislation to improve tourism
facilities here. It hag ordered
tourist agencies and promoters
to "pull no punches" in efforts
to achieve from hotels, transport
officials, and other groups as
high s standard of entertainment
and comfort for dollar tourists
as possible.
It is also reported that Pre
mier Eamon de Valera's gov.
emment intends to get in at the
source of the new dollar-flow
by putting shamrock-emblemed
aircraft of the state-owned Aer
Lingus (Irish Air Lines) on the
profitable North Atlantic run
from New York to Shannon.
Liners Scrapped
At the end of World War II,
de Valera's government bought
several Constellation airliners to
be used on the trans-Atlantic
and Paris runs, with possible ex
pansion to other routes later.
The scheme, however, came
under the economy axe of for
mer Premier John A. Costello's
coalition government during de
Valera's three years in opposi
tion between the 1948 elections
and his return to office last
summer. The Constellations
were sold and Aer Lingus went
back to the Dakotas it still uses
on its British and ' continental
rung.
Once, back in the saddle, de
Valera's team set about the sys
tematic re-establishment of proj
ects shelved or abolished by the
Costello government.
Reports say the trans-Atlantic
project is high' on the list for
re-establishment and may get a
boost as a result of the recent air
line conference at Nice, where
major world air lines debated
plans for bringing air travel to
income groups hitherto unable
to afford it.
