bank robber John Richard Bay

The G-men learned that the.
37-year-old Bayless knew his
way around, a kitchen shortly
after they arrested him at La
Guardia airport Wednesday as
he got off a transworld airliner
from Los Angeles. '
Money. Recipes Found -
They found in his personally
initialed brief case the. $19,000
loot from a Hollywood bank
robbery Monday and a loose-leaf
notebook filled with recipes
most of them, for breads, cakes
and pies. " , '
The . balding, bespectacled
Bayless, who looks more like a
, securities salesman than a bank
robber, told authorities he had
collected the recipes in the 12
years he spent as head of the
Alcatraz prison bakery..-.;
One federal agent figured the
recipes were "time tested" while
Bayless did the Alcatraz : stint
for robbing a Mansfield, Mo.,
bank of $591 in 1937.

Florence Brobeck, a home
economist and author of five
cook books, read through the
more than 100 pages of neatly
typed recipes and said Bayless
knew how to make the right
kind of dough.
Miss Brobeck admitted that in
her 30 years of cooking she had
once before seen one of Bayless
recipes. It was for raspberry ice
cream pie, made with gelatin,
vanilla ice cream and crushed
raspberries. "If they eat like
that at Alcatraz, maybe crime
does pay," she said.
