Plan March 1 Meeting
Nearly 100 southern Oregon
alcoholics and their wives and
husbands will assemble in Ash
land on March 1 f or an inter
group meeting of Alcoholics
Anonymous.
There won't be any liquor
around but there is a growing
competition between the four
groups as to which can brew up
the strongest coffee.
; A number of Ashland minis
ters, doctors and - law enforce
ment officers have been invited
to attend the meeting to learn
more of ,, how A. A- works m
achieving and maintaining the
sobriety of its members many
of whom were once considered
"hopeless" cases of alcoholism.
Were Publicity Shy '
Until recently, the four south
ern Oregon groups of A .A. in
Grants Pass, Medford, Ashland
and Klamath Falls preferred to
keep relatively shy of publicity.
The 11th tradition of A.A. reads:
"Our " public relations policy is
based on attraction rather than
promotion; we need alway main
tain personal anonymity at the
level of press, radio and films."
' . But a recent nation-wide sur
vey revealed that while 60 per
cent of the people had heard of
Alcoholics Anonymous, only 10
per cent of these had even the
remotest idea of the nature of
the organization.
Plan Initialed
Last month, the Medford group
initiated the plan to bring a
closer understanding of the Alco
holics Anonymous program when
it held an inter-group meeting
with the theme: "What is A.A.?"
The Medford members invited
a number of doctors, ministers,
attorneys and judges, and the re
sponse was termed "very grati
fying." .'
The Ashland meeting March 1
will be a direct follow-up on the
Medford session. The theme of
the Ashland inter-group meet
ing will be: "How A.A. Works."
Members from all four southern
Oregon cities will give individual
talks telling how the 12 A.A.
steps have worked for them. (It
is a common statement at A.A
meetings that there are 140,000
members and 140,000 different
ways to work the A-A. program.)
The status of Alcoholics Anony
mous in southern Oregon today
is far from the scene in Medfort
nearly five years ago when a
Portland member by the name
of Cris, came here to meet
with three desperate alcoholics
who had tried every "cure and
had been tabbed as hopeless.
Thes three, then four, and one
or two more struggled along with
the constant help of Cris for
nearly a year. Then the growth
became rapid and about the same
time A.A. began reaching to
other parts of the area. Groups
in Klamath Falls and Grants
Pass were organized. These
groups experienced growth sim
ilar to the Medford group.
In the fall of 1951 the Medford
group, which had included Ash
land members, had grown to a
point that it was deemed advis
able to split Ashland and Med
ford members. The Ashland
group was started with seven
members. It now has 12.
- Many members of AA tell how
Alcoholics Anonymous is more
than a means of keeping sober,
that it is a way of life, a spirit
ual program. But the Alcoholic
Foundation in New York tells
in about 100 words the basic
essence of Alcoholics Anony
mous. It reads:
Alcoholics Anonymous is a
fellowship of men and women
who share their experience.
strength and hope with each
other that they may solve their
common problem and help others
to recover from alcoholism.
'The only requirement for
membership is an honest desire
to stop drinking. AA has no dues
or fees. It is not allied with any
sect, denomination, politics, or
ganization or institution; does
not wish to engage in any con
troversy, neither endorses nor
opposes any causes. Our primary
purpose is to stay sober and help
other alcoholics achieve sobri
ety.-

known for her piano interpre

The pastor. Rolf H. Hansen.
said that Swartz comes to the
valley highly recommended and
that this concert should be of
real Interest to all who love fine
