the cleanup continues.
It will take years along the
Kaw valley to erase the scars of
the mightiest water ever seen
in this part of the country. It
was the nation's first billion-dollar
flood disaster.
North Topcka lies in a big
bend of the Kaw end as such
was a prime target for the fast
running muddy water of the
record flood. It, like North Law
rence and the Armourdale dist

the full force of the blow.

ed in the district have refused to
move elsewhere. Most of them
aren't interested in whether big
dams are built or not.
They want higher levees. They
are not haunted by the fear that
there once more will be 40
days or nights of rain to touch
off another flood.
The tragedy of the great flood
was in its aftermath, where it
could be read in shattered
houses and businesses and in the
silt that was two feet deep on the
first floors of homes.
' Charles Sheets, city sanitary
engineer, has spent eight to ten
hours a day directing the clean
up here since the water went
down. About 1,300 homes were
hit by the water, all but 100 in
North Topeka. About ISO have
been cleaned up.
The streets have been cleaned
but as in Armourdale down
stream, the work of opening the
storm sewers continues.
Houses Washed Out
Whole streets were ripped up
here and houses were washed
from their foundations to splin
ter against others or lie at odd
angles on the thoroughfares.
Business inventories were total
losses. So were the household
possessions of every family in
North Topcka.
Now six months later, this is
a story of the courage of people
in the face of such shocking loss
Take the case of Carl McFar
land. He and his wife, Betty,
have three children. He manages
a restaurant in the south part of
the city but lives in North
Topeka.
They pitched in as the water
went down. He ripped out part
of the walls to dig the silt from
them. He put in new wiring, new
plaster, new flooring. Now the
home is clean, with only minor
repairs remaining. ,
The city has spent $1,380,000
in the flood cleanup here, of
which 1.280.000 waa allocated
from the presidential emergency
fund.
While the people hurt by the
mighty water along the valley
either plunged back into the
wreckage and built anew or
moved to higher ground and
there started again, the various
got eminent agettcies Interested
in flood control as yet have been
unable to reach a plan accept
able to all cf them to prevent a
teotrreute.
