Cloud-Seeding Said To Be Inconclusive In Report; Experiments Will Continue

thieves in the Applegate area,
they said Saturday, after F. A.
Wells, a rancher, complained
that one of his herd was killed
and butchered during the week,
about a mile and a half from his
home.
Wells told police the thief
took the two hindquarters of the
animal, and left the rest, accord

R. M. Kent, manager of the
Talent Irrigation district, point
ed out that while final results
of last winter's work are not
available in terms of actual run
off, the irrigation districts feel
that important advances were
made in both technical and
equipment aspects of cloud seed
ing. These advances enhance the
possibilities for future opera
tions, he said, and in any event,
any increased snow would just
ify another's year's trials.
Make 50 Flights
The- report on the winter ex
periments showed that 50 seed
ing flights were made during
the period from November 1
to March 31, on 36 different
days. Water runoff figures from
the watersheds will not be avail-

Oregon's strawberry market is
somewhat unsettled, although
prices to growers are holding un
changed at 22 cents a pound, the
Oregon State college extension
service reported late last week.
Production of strawberries in
Oregon this year is expected to
be about the same as last year,
the service said. The crops of
1949 and 1950 are the third larg
est crops on record. The volume
in these two years was exceeded
only by the large crops of 1948
and 1941.

ranging from 4,000 to 6,000 feet.

the area makes for difficult fly
ing, the pilots say.
Agencies Cooperate
Agencies cooperation in the
experiments include the Med
ford, Talent and Rogue River
irrigation districts, of which Ed
Leach, Kent and W. D. Stead
man, Phoenix, respectively, are
superintendents; the experiment
station, the soil conservation
service, and the flyers. The
Rogue River Valley Traffic as
sociation, composed of fruit
packers and allied industries,
owns the planes used in the hail
operations, and leases them for
use in the winter flights on a
net cost basis.
Making the analysis of opera
tions data, gathered from snow
surveys, observers in and near
the area, and from pilot reports,
are Robert T. Beaumont, assist
ant water forecaster at the sta
tion; W. T. "Jack" Frost, snow
survey leader for the state, and
R. A. "Arch" Work, research
project supervisor for the soil
conservation office.
