field. Frontline reports pictured the
South Koreans as a bleary-eyed,
dazpd army which has been
fighting and running continuous
ly for five days under relentless
punishment and from giant Russian-made

areas" are being made. New am
phibious landings are claimed
deep in South Korea.

Reduced Death Toll

council to Join In the nationwide
drive to reduce the annual
Fourth of July accident toll, ac
cording to Mayor Diamond
Flynn. "This is an invitation we
cannot ignore," he declared.
Flynn said, "It is an Invitation

dents." He added that the holi

United States senator. In the No

announced here today.
Chairman will be H. B. Van
Duzer, lumberman and former
chairman of the state highway
commission. Van Duzer, vice
president of the Inman-Poulsen
Lumber company, resides in
Portland.
The 11-member general com
mittee will be supplemented by
committees soon to be named in
each of Oregon's 36 counties.
The Latourette committees will
work closely with the regular
democratic organization in the

their youngsters play with fire
works. They stressed that thous
ands of persons are maimed and
millions of dollars of damage
done each year by fireworks. If
firecrackers are purchased, nev
ertheless, only the smaller less
dangerous ones should be used,
some council members said.
Drive Slowly
The council is advising motor
ists to start early and drive
slowly on holiday jaunts and to
be patient and courteous in
heavy traffic.
National Safety council is us
ing the slogan, "Take it easy on
the Fourth be alive on the
fifth." Motorists are told not to
make "wheels of chance" of
their steering wheels, "because
you bet your life." Council offic
ials pointed out that 700 persons
were killed by accident during
1949 Fourth of July weekend.
Others died later of injuries.
Traffic accidents accounted for

Five New Polio Cases
Reported in Oregon
Portland, Ore., June 29 (U.R)
Five new cases of Infantile par
alysis for the week ending June
24 and nine cases of Rocky
Mountain spotted fever since the
May 1 opening of trout fishing
season were reported today by
the state board of heallh.
Three of the polio cases came
from Portland. Another case
came from Multnomah county
outside Portland and from Lane
county.
The nine cases of Rocky Moun
tain fever compares unfavorably
with the IS cases during the
1948-49 period, the board said,
and sportsmen were advised to
visit a physician for vaccination.
The fever is transmitted to
humans by the bites of wood
ticks, which ordinarily are found
east of the Deschutes river. The
fever also may be contracted by
crushing a tick on the skin, but
illness is not transmitted from
person to person.
District Office of
Census Sets Closing
Eugene, June 29 The bureau
of the census district office at
Eugene will close at 5 p.m.. Fri
day, June 30, District Supervis
or Ray Feves reported.
He said that further census in
quiries should be directed to the
area supervisor, 621 federal
building. Seattle.
The Eugene office has been
headquarters for enumeration in
seven southwestern Oregon
counties, including Jackson. It
was opened about one year ago
and remained open for the 17th
decennial census.

Sportsmen Pilots
To Visit in Medford

About 150 members of the
Sportsmen Pilots of Oregon will
fly around the state during the
Fourth, of July week-end.
They will leave McMinnville
Sunday for La Grande, where
an overnight stop will be made.
They expect to land here 9 a.m.
Monday, arrive in Klamath Falls
in the late afternoon, and stop
overnight at Medford.
Pilots will leave Medford in
time to arrive at Albany by 1
p.m. to participate In the annual
timber carnival there.
