Capitol Floating
On Sheet of Water

Secretary of State Earl T. New
bry disclosed today that the
southwest corner of the state
capitol building is "floating" on
a sheet of water.
The water has cracked plaster
in every basement room in that
section of the building, Newbry
said.
Newbry, whose duties include
those of custodian of state build
ings, expressed belief that the
water is seepage from rains. He
also said there was a possibility
that some springs are located
beneath the building.
To Request Survey
Newbry said he will ask the
board of control to authorize a
survey by an engineer to get es
timates of cost of eliminating the
water. Then he will present the
problem to the 1951 legislature.
Newbry is a member of the
board of control. The other menv
bers are Gov. Douglas McKay
and State Treasurer Walter J
Pearson.
Two grooves have been carved
out of the cement in the engine
. room. Each is about four inches
' deep and IV2 inches wide. One
is about three feet long and the
other slightly shorter. Lawrence
Christiansen, superintendent of
the building, estimated a flow
of 30,000 gallons of water a
month through the long trench
in the rainy season.

annual two-week vacations next
week end, but skeleton crews
will stay behind to repair equip
ment and overhaul machinery.
