War against the spruce bud
worm was waged successfully
here today as the state forestry
department, using 34 planes,
sprayed DDT over 80,000 acres
in the Kinzua area and 65,000
acres in uie UKian ana La
Grande areas.
John B. Woods Jr., assistant
state forester in charge of the
budworm control project, said
this total will complete about
25 per cent of the 480,000 acres
to be treated.
Woods said that operation
were temporarily slowed befor.

To Resign Position

Miss Mary L. Burke will retire
soon and for the first time in
34 years students will enter
Renssaelaer Polytechnic institute
without being greeted by her.
She also was one of the last
with whom RPI students talked
before leaving to begin their
careers.
Miss Burke, who has seen the
engineering school grow from
less than 700 students In 1916 to
about six times that number
now, will retire as registrar
June 30.
In her duties, she came to
know every student personally,
patiently listened to troubles,
and gave her counsel.
Sometimes the students had
money problems, and Miss Burke
helped out with personal loans.
"Not one of the boys ever
failed to pay me back," she says.
Sick Helped Alio
Miss Burke didn't confine her
interest in the students to her ot
fice. When they were sick in lo
cal hospitals, they could be sure
of a visit from her. In the case
of one student, a polio victim,
she visited him weekly for the
five years he lived in an iron
lung.
Once, Miss Burke arranged
funeral services for a foreign
student, even to purchasing the
casket. Another time she was
on hand to pull the body of a
student from a vicinity pool in
which he had drowned.
Miss Burke aLso holds some
sort of record for receiving
Christmas cards at least 1.000
each year from alumni and their
families who remember her
kindnesses.
