29's into flying service stations.
The first group of four-motored
superfortresses to
go through the conversion line
were taken from storage on the
field storage where the planes
had gone after finishing over
seas tour of duty.
The conversion work involves
removal of tons of excess mater
ial from the giant planes, which
ordinarily, when ready for
bomb-loading in combat, weigh
about 60 tons.
The chief of the aircraft re
pair section at the big Utah air
base, P. M. Buller, and the
branch foreman, Clarence Fix,
direct the intricate operation.
" W want to make them as
light as possible," explained Bul
ler, a veteran of years in air
craft rmair work.

Starts Life Term
San Jose, Calf, June 27 (U.R)
Thomas P. Talle, pudgy ex-cat'
tleman, began serving a life sen
tence in San Quentin prison to
day for killing his second wife,
Marie.
Defense attorneys said they
olan an immediate appeal.
The sentence was handed
down by Superior Judge William
F. James yesterday. Talle was
convicted of first degree murder
with life imprisonment recom
mended, which made the sen
tence mandatory.
Talle. heir to a New Mexico
cattle fortune, will be eligible
for oarole in seven years.
Present in the court was Tal
le's 13-year-old daughter, Mary
Beth. She burst into tears as
sentence was pronounced and
was comforted by her mother.
Mrs. Mary Talle, the defendant's
first wife.
Wonder Drugs Cut
Dreaded Diseases
San Francisco. June 27 (U.R)
The new "wonder drugs" have
reduced deaths from five of the
most dreaded diseases to an all
time low, it was reported at the
American Medical association
convention today.
Dr. William M. Kirby, Se
attle, told the 10,000 delegates
that owing to the use of peni
cillin, streptomycin and similar
drugs, deaths from scarlet fever
tuberculosis, syphilis, whooping
cough and inflammation of the
intestines were at an all-time low
last year.
Furthermore, he said, deaths
from pneumonia were 40 per
cent below the average during
the years 1938-47.

27, held an outdoor meeting
and picnic at the park on Sun
day, June 25. A good attend
ance, including a number of
parents, saw Michael Brace re
ceive his bobcat pin. Mr. Har-
gett also presented mother pins
to Mrs. Edith Benner and Mrs.
P. W. Lane. One of the high
lights of the meeting was the
presentation of a six year serv
ice medal to Mrs. Hargett. Vis

The Bolivian cabinet resigned
today, President Mamberto Urri-
agolaitia opened consultations
to appoint a new government,
business of making good air
planes better, said that in tak
ing out excess gears, the idea
was to make it possible for the
flying tankers to carry "every
cupful" of gas they can.
Blister' Removed
At Hill Air Force base, armor
plate and all guns are taken out
and the holes they formerly oc
cupied in the B29's patched.
Most gun-sighting blisters also
are removed.
"You'd be surprised at how
much wiring needed for com
bat operations but not necessary
to the tankers we take out,
added Fix.
An inspection of one of the
superforts being converted here
found few installations inside
the machine that could be rec
ognized by a correspondent who
flew In similar aircraft in war
time. But much of the empty space
will be filled before the aerial
service stations go into opera
tion. The final work is not done by
the Air Force itself but at the
Boeing aircraft plant In Seat
tle. There the actual fuel tanks
are added, along with pumps,
hoses and the unique vane
equipped boom that connects the
tanker with the fueling plane.
Dual Operation
The pre-conversion work be
ing done at Hill Base is part of
a dual Air Force project. Sim
ilar operation are also under
way at Tinker Air Force base,
Oklahoma City.
Col. C. B. Root, maintenance
director at Hill Base, is particu
larly proud of the work being
done by his own men.
"The planes we've already sent
to Boeing won their complete
approval," Root boasted.
Buller, who started his career
at the Boeing plant before shift
ing to the Air Force, admitted
that the aerial tankers were a
far cry from the "stick and wire
jobs" thev flew In 1929.
"We thought then that a tri-
motored Ford was as big as
they'd ever build a plane," he
recalled. "But this project here
proves that anyone can be
wrong."
