Further Increase in Meat
Prices Seen This Summer
Washington, June 27 (U.R)
With gome consumerg mutter
ing already about a meat-buy
ing strike, government experts
foresee a further rise in meat
prices this summer.
The agriculture department's
meat experts predict that a sea
sonal production slump will
force meat prices higher.
No price decline Is expected
until next fall when produc
tion increases. Animal slaughter
hits its high point in the win
ter. Prices may be down consid
erably from current levels by
then.
A half dozen of the depart
ment meat experts agree on
the main cause of today's high
prices: "Consumer prosperity.
Since prewar (1935-39), one of
ficial, the American consumer's
Income (after income taxes) has
gone up more, percentagewise
than the retail price of meat.
Buyer Strike Unieen
For that reason the experts
don't see much prospect for a
concerted buyers' strike, such
as that recommended last week
by Mrs. Dennis E. Jackson
president of the Cincinnati Con
sumers conference.
Mrs. Jackson suggested that
housewives stop buying meat
until prices drop. She suggested
they buy cheese, poultry, eggs
and fish instead.
The expert said that smaller
demand would cause meat
prices to drop. But, he said, as
soon as the striking families
resumed buying their normal
amounts of beef the price would
go right up again.
One beef-lover wrote the de
partment recently to complain.
He had it straight from his
butcher that the cattlemen were
on a "production strike.
Rebuilding Herd, '
The department said no, the
cattlemen are just holding down
markctinR to rebuild their
herds which were depleted af
ter the war when people ate
beef fater than it was being pro
duced. As the herds expand consum
ers eventually will start get
ting bigger supplies of beef.
Some officials predict the in
crease may not show up until
the fall of 1951.
But Charlie Burmeister, dean
of the agriculture department's

said, however, that acreage al
lotments will be continued.
Officials said the 1951-crop
acreage allotment program
would call on farmers to reduce
plantings voluntarily. The size of
the national planting allotment
will be announced in about three
weeks. Under acreage allotments
farmers who overplant merely
lose eligibility for government
price support loans.
Marketing quotas, however,
impose such heavy penalties for
non-compliance that they cannot
be used unless approved by a 2-1
vote of the growers. Marketing
quota tells a farmer how much
he can sell without paying a
heavy penalty tax. Three crops
cotton, peanuts and tobacco
are being produced under mar
keting quotas this year.
Farm law requires quotas for
wheat when the total supply ex
ceeds a legally-defined "normal
supply" by more than 20 p e r
cent. Brannan said total prospec
tive supply of wheat for the 1950
51 marketing year i only about
18 per cent above normal.
