Zoomed Toward Sun
When a mock enemy bom
ber was picked up on the air
command's radar screen, 1st Lt.
Alexander L. Cochran and I
strapped ourselves in a warmed
up fighter and charged down
the 10,000-foot concrete run
way for the interception.
We roomed toward the sun to
search for our quarry which was
loafing along somewhere at 400
miles an hour.
Interceptions are made any
where within a 200-mile radius
of this sun-baked air field in a
matter of minutes. With Jets
and modern B-50 bombers
streaking toward rendevous
points at combined speeds of
more than 1,200 miles an hour,
seconds are important.
The air force emphasized that
operation whipstock is an ex
ercise to train pilots, ground
personnel and radar units in
split-second cooperation and co
ordination. This, the air force
said, is necessary to repel a pos
sible enemy striking force.
Score Favors Defenders
Unofficially, the battle score
has been overwhelmingly in fa
vor of the Jet defenders.
Flying with Lt. Cochran also
was an elementary lesson In
Pacific .northwest geography.
Above the 30,000-foot level our
flying time from here to Spo
kane 120 miles was less than
IS minutes.

"A cheering, applauding su
preme Soviet (parliament) voted
unanimously last night to con
tinue Premier Joseph Stalin s
government in office."
INTERESTING?
Of course it's interesting.
But it's not unusual. It would
have been HIGHLY UNUSUAL
if the members of the Russian
supreme Soviet had voted to
throw Uncle Joe out on his ear,
for in that event they would
have been voting to THROW
THEMSELVES OUT ON THEIR
EARS.
Politicians seldom do things
like that.
THE members of the supreme
Soviet (whose iohs as Rus
sian jobs go, are very, very,
very cushy) then went on to en
dorse a couple of resolutions
adopted recently at a "World's
Peace Partisans congress" held
in Stockholm. The resolutions
demand:
1. Prohibition of atomic weap
ons.
2. Branding as war criminals
officials of the first government
to use atomic weapons.
After that they dusted off
their hands and went on record
field and the 325th all-weather
unit from McChord air force
base near Tacoma have been
split for the combined opera
tion. Divided into wing sections of
four, the modern fighters will
scramble beyond sight of north
west residents for the remainder
of this week.
They offer encouraging regut
tal to recent statements that this
section of the United States is

policies as "imperialist and ag
gressive." America and Britain,
these speakers said, are using
atomic energy FOR WAR. Rus
sia, they added, has mastered
atomic energy FOR PEACEFUL,
CREATIVE USES ONLY.
BUSHWAH?
Of course it's bushwah.

that while Russia is prepar
ing for war with every ounce of
energy she possesses she is talk
ing peace out of the other side
of her mouth. While we prepare
for hot war, all our diplomats
are talking about THE COLD
WAR WE ARE FIGHTING.

they accuse us of scheming for
aggressive war.
They are hoping that in time
they will condition people's re
flexes so that when they hear
the Russians talk they will
THINK OF PEACE and when
they hear us talk they will
THINK OF WAR.
Since everybody wants peace
(exactly at Pavlov's guinea-pig
dogs wanted food) that will tend
to turn the sympathies of mil
lions upon millions of people
toward Russia rather than
toward us.
I'M AFRAID we're playing Rus
sia's game. We talk constantly
of the "cold war" we're fighting.
We tell of the staggering weap
ons we're creating (bombs that
will track down their target as
a dog tracks down a rabbit, for
example).
I think we ought to talk more
about peace and less about war.
We have to go on preparing for
war, of course, But let's not talk
so much about it. So far as war
preparations are concerned, let's
just saw wood and say nothing.
