If you think that eight-year
agreement Ski-Nose Hope signed
with his sponsor ig a long time
. . . take a listen. One Don Mc
Neil, who for 17 years has em
ceed the "Breakfast Club," has
just wrapped up a 20 year con
tract with ABC. A 20-year con
tract isn't bad in any business . .
but in radio, it's one of those
things that happen "once in a
blue moon."
Anybody who hasn't heard the
signature of the squeaking door?
Well, as you no doubt know, it's
the scene-setter for your host
Raymond . . on Inner Sanctum.
And. it's one of the shows we
mentioned last week as coming
to the valley in the near future.
Starts on July 13th, in fact . . .
with exact hour yet to be announced.
Bill Cullen. the boy with a
butzer for a brain on "Quick as
a Flash." is also straight man for
Carol Douglas' show . . at 9:25
a. m. Commenting on bathing
suits proportioned to fit all sizes
of women. Carol was interrupted
, by Bill, with the remark that
. he'd rather see all women pro
portioned to the bathing suits.
A charming thought, eh what?

1949 Payroll Down
In Jackson County
Covered payrolls in nearly
half of Oregon's counties were
higher in 1949 than in the pre
vious year, despite a general de
cline of $30 million from the
1948 record of $973 million, the
state unemployment compensa
tion commission reported today.
In Jackson county payrolls drop
ped from more than $30 million
in 1948 to about S29V4 million
in 1949.
Of the 15 counties in which
increases took place, four Mar
ion, Douglas, Umatilla and Des
chutes were among the upper
half. Sherman county had the
biggest rat of gain from 1948
with 80.5 per cent.
Changes in rank since 1940
have been numerous, the com
mission said. Klamath county,
second in the state in point of
covered payrolls in 1940, has
dropped to eighth place while
Lane county has nearly doubed
the payrolls of its nearest rival,
Marion county, to hold the runner-up
position. The commission
said the most spectacular gain
was registered . by Douglas
county, which has gone from 17th
in 1940 to fourth in 1949 with a
payroll 13 times as large as at
the beginning of the decade.
Jackson county maintained its
seventh place position over the
10-year period.

Missouri Hotel Man
Victim of Assassin
Kansas City, Mo., June 22
(U.R) Marshall H. Dean, 35. as
sistant manager of the Hotel
President and son of its manag
ing director, was shot and killed
today as he walked into his of
fice on the mezzanine of the bis
downtown hostelry.
sgt. ieo Moeai of tne ponce
homicide bureau said that E. G.
Murrell, a former room clerk at
the hotel, was causht after a 3'i
block chase and arrested in con
nection with the shooting.
Hoedl said that Murrell said
nothing immediately following
his arrest.
Witnesses at the hotel said that
Dean's killer apparently had
been hiding behind a large pil
lar. The first of three or four
bullets struck Dean after he
had taken several steps into the
office.
He staggered into the adjoin
ing office and fell, face up, be
fore the desk of W. C. Maser. 62.
auditor.
"Mr. Dean tried to say some
thing but I couldn't understand
him. ' Maser said.

HEALTH CXAMINA
In your column Tecently you
advised a physical examination
each year, also a dental exam-
Ml 'LJWi) Ination. I have
been wonder
ing how often
one should
have one's eyes
examined.
Some say once
every ten
years, ' others
every five
years. (M. W.
M.).
The doctors
liire send pa
tients into the hospital for com
plete physical check-ups. Do you
think it can be done satisfactory
in local hospitals or is a place
like (the best advertised clinic)
preferable? Also, please tell me
what a complete check-up should
include and about how much it
should cost. (R. J. P.)
Personally, I wouldn't give a
nickle or my time for an eye
examination at any time unless I
had eye trouble or reason to
think I might need glasses.
It must make the local doctors
tired when you smart shoppers
go traipsing off to the better ad
vertised "clinic" for your
"checkups."
People are funny that way.
The farther they go from home
on shopping expeditions the
more they are willing to pay for
all the Rube Goldberg tests
the well known "clinic" sells
'em. If the local doctors find
this or that laboratory test ad
visable these funny people sub
mit to it grudgingly and suspect
the doctors of "running up a
bill." Far away from home at
the "clinic" they get a thrill
out of any and all the machinery
the "clinic" racketeers please to
put them through and pay for
it proudly it will be something
to talk about for years, especi
ally when or if some "ordinary"
doctor has the temerity to make
his own diagnosis.
Evidently I failed to empha
size, or perhaps my article was
too long to print, the importance
of sticking to your own doctor
for your periodic health examin
ations, for the records of your
previous examinations are valu
able for comparison with your
present condition. You may say.
if you are fond of travel, that
they can keep records at the
"clinic" too. Yes, maybe. And
some bright clerk or attendant
there may even remember you
But even that would hardly
make it worth the money. Your
case would have to be unique

Fake Passport Ring
Under Investigation
Washington, June 22 (U.R)
The house un-American activ
ities committee today called
two witnesses for questioning
about an alleged communist-operated
fake passport ring.
Subpoenaed to appear were
Phillip Bart, an editor of the
communist Daily Worker, and
Marcel Scherer, one-time west
coast labor organizer, identified
by the committee as a member
of the communist party.
A spokesman said the com
mittee is continuing the investi
gation in which it previously
revealed the use of fraudulent
American passports by commu
nists, Including Gerhardt Eisler
and Earl Browder.
The number of civilian em
ployees on the federal govern
ment's payroll increased from
563,805 in December 1932 to 1,
981.156 in December 1949. Total
annual salaries and wages paid
to these federal employees have
soared from $1 billion in 1932 to
over $6' billion today.

TION NOT 'CHECK-UP"
pression on the mind of any of
the medical employees Of the
"clinic." To them you are Just
customer M-C-2162-W. To the
doctor at home you are a per
son. In any periodic health examin
ation, that is, a voluntary visit
to the physician for examination
at certain intervals after forty,
one of the essentials I men
tioned in the article titled Con
sult Your Physician When You
Art Wall is inspection of the
eyeground or interior of eyeball
for early cardiovascular degen
eration. The physician sees the
minute arteries in the retina or
sensitive film in the back of the
eye, and the process of arterio
sclerosis (hardening of the ar
teries) is evident in these ar
terioles long before any general
manifestations develop. The
physician uses an ophthalmo
scope to look into the eye, but
any general practitioner uses
this instrument Just as he uses a
stethoscope.
Theoretically or Ideally it
might be an excellent rule of
health that every one undergo a
general physical examination
each year. Practically it seems
neither necessary nor feasible,
as we shall explain in talks to
follow.
