N. M., went out after the quali
fying medal in the 32nd PGA
golf championship today, brim
ming with confidence in a new
cross-handed putting grip he im
provised halfway through the
opening round.
Desperate over failure to
knock down putts on the front
nine Furgol switched to the new
grip and he blazed home in 37
33 70 to tie Slugging Chick
Harbert of Detroit for the lead
after the first of two qualifying

Book Burning Campaign

The independent Singtao Daily
News said today in a Canton dis
patch that Chinese communists
had launched a book burning
campaign. The newspaper said
more than 1,000 volumes, in
cluding some English titles,
were removed from the public
library in the Shekki district
outside Canton and burned.

he would welcome the Ameri
can league club with open

Final action on any renewal
of the Big Ten-Pacific Coast
Rose Bowl agreement probably
will not come until May, 1951,
spokesmen for both conferences
indicated today after a one-day
meeting to negotiate differences.

Kenneth L. "Tug" Wilson of the
Big Ten said both committees
would report back to the individ
ual conferences n December.
Then another negotiating ses
sion would be held with the final
vote by each conference slated
for the May, 1951 meeting.

leagues discussed three phases of
the contract at yesterday's meet
ing, allocation of tickets, meth
od of selection of teams and re
striction on practice periods.
