Some nifty relief pitching in
the fifth inning by newcomer
Pete Jonas went for naught as
he lost his control in the next
stanza and three walks combined
with a single and a Rogues' er
ror helped give Willows a 6 to 4
victory here last night.
Jonas, who was signed only
yesterday, took over the hurling
chores from starter Bill Francis
with the bases full and only one
out and struck out the next two
men. However, the next inning
the former Pacific Coast leaguer
walked the first two to face him
and with one out a single, an
other walk and an error gave
the Cards two runs and the
game. They got but one more hit
off Jonas after that sixth inning.

Medford in the meantime
picked up a pair of runs in
the first stanza when Russ Stuart
singled and was forced at second
by Johnny Popovicri who reach'
ed first base when the first base
man dropped the ball on a try
for a double play.
Don Williams drove a ground
er at the shortstop who fumbled
the ball, allowing Popovich to
score and then Williams crossed
the plate as Bob Haddock tripled
to right. On this last hit the
rightfielder missed a shoestring
catch and the ball rolled to the
fence.
Two more crossed the plate
for Medford in the third in
ning as Popovich led off with a
line single to left center, was
forced at second by Centerfleld-
er Chuck Freeman, Haddock
lined a single to right and Lloyd
Jones lined a double off the left
centerfield fence.

Opens Season Tonight
Opening games in the recently
organized Pee wee u a s e o a 1 1
league will be held tonight start
ing at o:3u at Talent, Eagle point
and Ashland.
This diamond loop composed
of two divisions will play their
games Monday and Wednesday
evenings at school fields in Tal
ent. Medford. Central Point
Phoenix, Ashland, Jacksonville
and Eagle Point. An eighth team
may join later.
Games this evening will pit
Jacksonville at Talent, central
Point at Eagle Point and Phoe
nix at Ashland. Two games will
be played at each place with the
boys 12 years or younger play
ing at 6:30 and the teams with
youths 15 or under playing about
7 p.m.
The game with the younger
had men on base in every inning
but the seventh but hits would
not come right.
Francis as starting hurler lor
the Rogues was going along in
championship style until that
fatal fifth stanza when the Cards
combined thre singles, a dou
ble and a walk to tally four
runs. The youthful lefthander
howed a good curve ball and
some speed.

ing of the league Bill Gates was
elected president and Jean Eber
hart, secretary.
Start Learning Early
Eberhart explained that
through this Pee Wee league it
is hoped to start boys in learning
baseball while they still are
young, thereby giving them an
opportunity to work through
the 12-year-olds through the 15-year-olds,
Junior Legion, etc.
Each town is represented by a
12-year-old team and by a 15-year-old.
Medford may provide
the eighth team, evidently de
pending on how much interest
there is aroused when the Sum
mer Baseball school opens next
Monday.
Games next Monday night will
send Medford to Jacksonville.
Ashland to Talent and Phoenix
to Eagle Point. Central Point
will draw the bye.

Snead and Pistol-Hot Lloyd
Mangrum were the gallery fa
vorites today as 128 of the na
tion's top professional golfers
swung into the opening qualify
ing round of the 32nd PGA
championship.
Eighteen holes today and an
other 18 tomorrow will slash
the field to 64 for the deadly
business of man against man
match play beginning Friday.
Snead doesn't have to qualify
for his match play berth but
he'll play along both days as
part of his grim campaign to
play himself back into the win
ning form that put him at the
top of the heap on the PGA's
official money winning list with
$20,861.
Ten former winners and all
eight of last year's quarter-finalists
were listed in the draw
although Johnny Revolta of
Evanston, 111., champion in 1935,
was a doubtful starter.

The University of Texas Long
horns trampled the Washington
State Cougars 12 to 1 last night
to even the count in the Na
tional Collegiate Athletic asso
ciation baseball tournament.
Texas bunched 15 hits effec
tively to down the Cougars. It
was Washington State's first de
feat in the double-elimination
tourney and left the Cougars
and Longhorns with identical
records of three victories and
one defeat.
Wisconsin eliminated Ala
bama, 3 to 1, in the opening
game of last night's double
header to remain in the running
with Texas, Washington State
and Rutgers. Wisconsin and
Rutgers each have won two and
lost one.
Sudden death faces losers
from now on and either Wis
consin or Rutgers will drop by
the wayside when they clash in
tonight's only contest.
The winner tonight takes on
Texas tomorrow night, and the
winner of that contest meets
Washington State in the finale
Friday night.
Pete Jonas
New Pitcher
Pete Jonas, baseball coach at
Pacific university, Forest Grove,
and former Pacific Coast and
Western International league
player joined the Medford Ro
gues hurling corps yesterday and
probably will be used mostly in
relief work, Manager Tommy
Nelson said.
The veteran pitcher who play
ed with Seattle of the PCL in
1946 and 1947 and also with Spo
kane and ancouver. B.C., of the
WIL, throws righthanded and
bats lefthanded.
Jonas is the fifth addition to
the Rogues' squad since the lo
lal club went on the road on
June 9.

champion, in a five-round title
fight at a big outdoor show here
next month.
Echols knocked out Bull Hal
sey of Portland here Monday
night in his Oregon debut.
"I definitely have Echols for
next month and his manager.
Capt. Bill Burch, asked me to
get the toughest foe I can dig
up," Burdette said.
Al Alexander, who lost his
Oregon lightweight title to Jim
Puscas of Eugene Monday, has
asked for and received a rematch
on the next card, Burdette said.

mined bid to catch the high-flying
Tigers.
Yakima posted its sixth
straight win Tuesday night, 9 to
