Pittsburg, Cal., June 19 (Spe
cial to The Mail Tribune) Med-
ford's Rogues were victims of
two heart-breaking aetcats in
Far West league baseball yester
day at Pittsburg. The Rogues
lost the seven-inning opener o
to 1 and the 11-inning nightcap
3 to 2 to the Diamonds.
Pittsburgh gained a four game
clean sweep in the series as re
sult of the Sunday outcomes. The
Diamonds won 10 to 8 Friday
and 6 to 4 Saturday.

In both games yesterday the
Rogues forged aheaa in eariy
innings only to see Pittsburg
pnmp from behind.
Lloyd Jones, pitching for Med
ford, gave up oniy lour mis in
the first game. He whiffed three
and walked three. Medford got
its lone run In the fifth inning
when John Fopovich homered
over the left field fence.
Pittsburg collected two mark
ers in the sixth, cook singiea,
Enos was hit by a pitched ball
and DiMaggio walked to fill the
bases. Fraser singled, scoring
Cook, and Goldstein walked,
scoring Enos.
In the second game Dick
Smith on the mound for Med
ford gave up seven hits, fanned
four and walked two. He was
also the Rogue batting star with
a home run in the second Inning
and two singles for a three out
of five batting record.
Stuart Walks
Russ Stuart walked in the
first inning and Popovich sin
gled. Charles Freeman forced
out Stuart on a fielder's choice.
Bob Haddock walked. Popovich
was picked off second base for
the second out but Don Wil
liams singled to center field,
scoring Freeman.
Pittsburg tallied In the second
Inning and tied the count in the
eighth. The Diamonds won on
Enos' homer in the 11th.

Rogues Sign
Two Players
Mel Carpenter, business man
ager of the Medford Rogues, to
day announced -signing of two
more players in an attempt to
get the club back in the win
column after a disastrous road
trip which saw the Rogues drop
8 out of 11.
Mike Kanshln, a veteran
pitcher, has been obtained from
the Vancouver Capilanoes of the
western International league.
Kanshln Is a right hander.
Charles Freeman has been
signed in an effort to get more
hitting power in the outfield.
He is a graduate of the Univer
sity of Southern Callfornlan and.
although a rookie, comes to Med
ford highly recommended.
The crippled Rogues have
found the going tough for some
time. The pitching staff is badly
crippled with Jack Lloyd and
Glen Gaetly, both expected to
be aces, down with sore arms.
Tommy Nelson is out with an
injured leg and Milt Martin, a
catcher, has been playing third
base. Several other players have
been shuffled because of in
juries with Manager Nelson mak
ing every effort to get the club
into a winning combination.

Ton Hemmerling, former coach
of the San Francisco Shamrocks,
was signed today to coach the
Portland Penguins of the Pacific
Coast Hockey league next year.
The Shipstads and Johnson,
owners and operators of the
Portland team, announced the
signing of Hemmerling, who led
the Shamrocks to the chnmpion
ship in the southern division
last year.

Baseball bookkeeping fans
whirled their pencil sharpeners
in sheer glee after Sunday's Pa
cific Coast league double-headers.
The circuit was loaded with
unusual baseball.
Of top interest were the 21
home runs blasted in the four
twin bills, with 15 being knocked
in the first three afternoon con
tests.
Beavers Get Three
The breakdown on the four-
baggers was Seattle eight, Port
land and San Francisco three,
Oakland, Los Angeles and Hol
lywood two and San Diego one.
Sacramento alone had none.
A curious feat was performed
by Seattle's Bill Schuster, Marv
Rackley, Walt Judnich, George
Vico and Tod Davis. i,ach blast
ed home runs in the first game,
Davis getting two, only to find
the Angels defeating, them, 11
to 8. Lou Klein and Stan Spence
homered for Los Angeles.
Ramsey Hurt
In that game. Rainier Out
fielder Bill Ramsey, apparently
confused because of all the heavy
hitting, crashed into the center
field wall trying to catch a long
one. He was hospitalized with
a possibly broken left arm.
Seattle blanked the Angels, 1
to 0, in the finale off Walt Jud
nich's second homer of the day.
Another oddity: Although win
ning the series their seventh
successive one Seattle remains
in seventh place in the standings.
Other scorings included ban
Francisco's double win over
Portland, 9 to 5 and 6 to 4-; Oak
land and San Diego split with
the Oaks grabbing the opener,
8 to 5, and the Padres capturing
7 to 0 shutout in the second
game. Hollywood took a double
win over Sacramento, 3 to 2 and

Although losing the opener.
Portland clouted Al Lien and
Con Dempsey for 15 hits, in
cluding home runs by Joe Bro
via (his 18th), Eddie Basinski
and Jim Gladd. Les Fleming in
creased his league runs-battcd-in
leadership to 77.
In the second contest. Dino
Rcstelli and Joe Grace hit two
run homers off Roy Helser and
sent him to the showers. Grace
extended his safe batting string
to 12 games.

The international 15-round

Lamotta, who hasn't defended
the 160-pound crown since he
wrested it from the late Mar

ternational Boxing club told
him he must go through with
the defense or they would "toss
him to the wolves," which
meant throw him into the laps
of National Boxing association

to vacate his title.

(U.R) Lloyd Mangrum, with the
round robin title under his belt
and $3,000 first prize money in
his pocket, was fingered by his
brother golfers today as "the
guy to beat" in the P.G.A. tourn
ament at Columbus, O., on Wed
nesday. Mangrum got the nod princi
pally on his triumph perfor
mance over New Rochelle's roll
ing 6,569 layout during the past
few days. He wound up the
gruelling 90-hole test with a
blistering 16-under-par 344 and
comfortable plus 37 total.
Sammy Snead, who won last
year's P.G.A title at Richmond,
Va., is among those who thinks
Mangrum has an excellent
chance to dethrone him.
"You have to go along with
the guy who is on top," he de
clared, "and off the last three
tournaments, I'll pick Mangrum
even though he isn't at his best
at match play."

Redding, despite the double
loss, remained four and one-half
games ahead of Klamath Falls in
