Historic Ironworks
Restoring Scheduled
Saugus, Mass. (U.R) The na
tion's first known Ironworks,
built in 1644 on the Saugus river,
will be restored as an historic
landmark and a standing tribute
to the American steel industry.
With the financial backing of
the American Iron and Steel
Institute, the First Iron Works
Association of Saugus is search
ing ancient documents and dig
ging in the bramble-covered
ruins for details of the plant,
which was abandoned in 1675.
It turned out household pots and
pans, nails, bolts and chisels
and other iron implements used
by early Masachusetts Bay col
onists. One hundred men employed
at Saugus turned out a ton bar
of iron a day in the 1640'i. They
used iron ore raked up from bogs
and supplemented their supply of
limestone with shells and coral
from the sea.

'Bottle Preacher'
Says Gospel Spread
Piedmont. Ala. (U.R) How
slny 200 miles inside the United
States and carry the gospel to
foreign parts at small cost has
been solved by Jewel Pierce.
He calls himself a "bottle and
water preacher," and explains
his way of doing missionary
work like this:
"A bottle and water preacher
puts printed religious literature
in glass bottles and corks them
nd throws them into the near
est waters."
The results have been surpris
ing. Pierce said.
Since he began tossing literature-laden
bottles in Alabama
rivers in June. 146, he reports
hearing from finders In 19 sea
shore states and two foreign
countries.
May Fertilize River
To Grow More Fish

day may fertilize streams to in
crease productivity of fish, Just
as the farmer does his lands.
The Washington State fisheries
department is making a study
to determine how environmental
factirs infulence migrntory fish.
It is believed that streams may
be made to produce more food
much in the manner of modern
farming practices, depnrtmcnt di
rector Alvin Anderson said. The
addition of minerals as a "fertil
izer'' to streams will be part of
the study.
The examination will Include
the effects of stream bed distur
bances on fish food supplies; the
relation between salmon popula
tions at both food abundance and
water flow levels and the speed'
with which disturbed streams re
cover their normal food produc

Jefferson's Famous
Tree Given Surgery

Modern tree surgery is being
used to save a beech tree, one of
the seven remaining original
trees planted by Thomas Jeffer
son at his home, Monticello.
George Van Yahres, tree con
sultant, is grafting a new trunk
into a wound in the original tree
to bridge over a spot where the
bark has died. The tree was split
by a windstorm some 50 years
ago.
Thomas Rhodes, who was care
taker at Monticello at the time,
pulled the tree together and
braced it with a chain and large
hooks. Since then, several more
modern innovations have been
used in the effort to keep the
tree sturdy. In 1925, the brace
was replaced with steel cables
and eyebolts.
Like many an old soldier, the
beech tree suffered from neglect
during World War II and the old
wound became so infected that a
large part of the bark died. That
is why the new graft is needed.
Yahres said the surgery will
take more than one year to com
plete. A young beech was select
ed from the stock of a specialized
New York nursery and planted
at the foot of the old Jefferson
beech. When sap movement in
the young tree is normal and the
young tree has fully recovered
from the shock of moving, the
actual grafting will bPSin.
White Men Construct
Aged Indian's Home
Julian, Cal. (U.R) San Diego
county's oldest man has a new
house, thanks to his friends and
neighbors.
Joequain Paipa, 109 chief of
the Inaja Indian reservation 10
miles southwest of Julian, lost all
his posessions except an old-fashioned
wood-burning stove when
his cabin burned.
Since then he and his 14-year-old
grandson, George Paipa,
have been living with friends in
a crowded cabin.
Members of the bureau of ra
dio and electrical appliances
heard of the old Indian's plight
and agreed to contribute a dollar
for each electrical blanket sold
during the month of January.
The sale netted $1,000.
Members of the Julian cham
ber of commerce and the Lions
club joined a group of 25 car
penters, ranchers and volunteers
and 18 sailors on liberty to build
the new cabin in one day.
Now the aged Indian has mov
ed his stove into his cabin and
a furniture dealer has promis
ed to provide him with furniture
so he and his grandson can live
in comfort.

bulls, snakes and baby chicks
have flown the Atlantic but dogs
are the number one air travelers
of our day in cargo planes, Trans
World Airlines reports.
The line carries an average of
eight dogs from abroad each
week.

Terms Ending Strike Announced, Portland State AFL Leaders
