you. He doesn't know what

He wants to remind you,
though, that being a fireman is
not all fighting fires, or speed
ing down a busy boulevard and
making everybody get out of
Chicago firemen, he says, are
out of the station only a iracuon
of the 67 hours a week they are

Pittsburg (U.R) Jeff Davis,
"king of the hoboes." has decided
"wanderlust is a terrible tiling."
Davis, who has traveled mure
than 3.000.000 miles, including
six trips around the world, said
he wouldn't do it again on a bet.
"Why, I have to be introduced
to my children every time I come
home." he smiled.
Davis, who stopped off here to
visit an old friend, said he was
in the best shape of his life, de
spite 67 years. The hobo king is
Grand Knight of the Knights of
the Road and president of the
Hoboes of America. Inc.
However, he said his main In
terest now is lobbying.
"Nowadays, hitch-hiking is too
dangerous for kids," he said. "So
we are trying to get a bill intro
duced in congress that will take
care of the situation."
Two Weki' Vacation
The hill, Davis said, would pro
vide restless youngsters with a
two-week vacation at govern
ment expense. Then they could
travel safely and in style, he
aid.
"Hoboes are getting sophisti
cated," Jeff mused. "We ride
trains and buses and airplanes
now. Of course, I have to get out
on the road sometimes for the
fun of it."
In all his travels. Davis said
he found no trace of communism
among the "bo's."
"Communism stands for regi
mentation and you can't regi
ment a hebo," Davis said. "Hit
ting the end of a freight is real
democracy."
Republicans to Back

Sen. Eugene D. Millikin, (R.,
Colo.) said today that republi
can senators will give "almost
unanimous support" to the so
cial security extension bill.
Millikin made the announce
ment after a republican confer
ence on the bill.
"Without polling the senators,"
Millikin said, "it was quite ap
parent that we will give strong,
almost unanimous support to the
bill." '
Milliken also said the republi
cans are unanimous in support
of a proposed senate finance
committee study to see If sorial
security coverage can h given
all Americans on a strict "pay-ts-you-go"
basis.

"Everybody thinks we go
fast," the chief said, "but we
don't. It's just that we're so
noisy."
The chief said all little boys
who want to be firemen must
eat what they're, supposed to and
get plenty of sleep because the
department won't take you if
you're not healthy.
You don't have to be very big,
he said. You must be five feet,
eight inches tall and weigh 145
pounds to join the Chicago de
partment, but that isn't so very
big.
Smartness Helps
You don't have to go to col
lege to be a fireman, or even to
high school. But you have to
take a written examination and
the chief will find out if you're
not as smart as you should be.
The chief thinks you should
get as much education as pos
sible hecause a dumb fireman
will stay a dumb fireman and
when his friends arc wearing
pretty gold braid he'll still bo
shining the engines.
The engines must be shined
after every fire.
The salary at present isn't as
high as in some other jobs. Chi
cago's firemen start at $3,100 a
year. But the chief said there's
a lot of chance for advancement.
And if you don't like being a
fireman, you can be a police
man, maybe. That's what most
of the Chicngo firemen who quit
end up as, he said.
