No Matter How Delivered,
Atom Bomb Is City Wrecker
; Washington, June 15 U.R
i No matter how you deliver it,
j whether in shells, missile war
f heads, or tramp steamers, the
atomic bomb remains a city
' wrecker.
So neither the army nor any
i body else is going to use atomic
v explosives to knock out a tank
here or a pillbox there or a slit
trench somewhere else.
That would be sending a giant
to do a midget s job, an author
ity said today.
No Small Explotiom
You still can't make a "small"

First Fraser Valley
Flood Waters Noted
Vancouver. B. C. Junp 15
U.R) The first Fraser vallev
flooding of 1950 was promised
around Mission tomorrow as the
Fraser river passed the danger
level of 28 feet today.
The level at Hope was 28.3
feet, and at Mission was 19.08
feet today, the dominion water
resources board here reported.
Tomorrow it will be past the
flood mark of 20 feet at Mission
"and a few people are going to
get their land wet," board of
ficial Douglas McLeod said.
port on the A-bomb was writ
ten in 1945.
"We haven't repealed or
changed any laws of physics
since then," he said.
To make an atomic explosion,
it still is necessary to get togeth
er a "hyper-critical mass" of
atomic explosive, uranium-235 or
Plutonium.
And once you do that, you
get a bang comparable to the ex
plosion of thousands of tons of
TNT. Even if only a pound of
the material "fissioned," the re
sultant blast would be the equiv
alent of 8,000 tons of exploding
TNT.
Overall Size Reduced
So when Defense Secretary
Louis Johnson, Gen. J. Lawton
Collins and Army Secretary
Frank C. Pace Jr. talk about
atomic "tactical" weapons, they
aren't talking about anti-tank ri
fles and the like.
It is no secret that the overall
size of the atomic bomb has been
reduced to some extent since the
destruction of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. It is the detonating
mechanism and material that is
bulky, not the explosive.
In Guided Missile
It is conceivable that the
A-bomb could by ingenious en
gineering tricks be fitted into the
warhead of a large guided mis
sile. In any case, military scientists
are trying to do just that. Rob
ert F. Rinehart, executive secre
tary of the research and devel
opment board, said last night
that they are working to that
end. He did not, however, make
a progress report. Others have
said it probably will take a
"few" years more two to five,
say to do the job.
