of valuable timber each year
may be prevented aome day by
man's rain-making device ac
cording to A. A. Brown, of the
United State Forest Service.
Brown in a report to the Mth
Fire Protection association, said
annual meeting of the National

lightning storms. He predicted
the future goal would be to pre
vent the storms from forming.
That may be done, he said,
through use of the rain-making
technique, developed by Dr. Vin
cent Schaefcr, of Schenectady.
"There is a chance to break up
such local storms before they
reach the lightening stage," he
said. "We also hope that the
work which has been going on

Williamsport, Pa. (U.R) Eleven-year-old
Thomas Stroble earn
ed the praise of his parents and
fellow members of 4-H clubs
when his clear thinking saved his
home from destruction by fire.
Tommy was tending to his
chickens when he saw smoke
pouring from the brooder house.
Flames began to lick at the walls
of the coop and came perilously
close to the house and other farm
buildings.
Tommy, living up to the first
"H" of the 4-H Club, which
stands for "head" or clear think
ing, grabbed a stout chain, at
tached it to a tractor and the
coop. He dragged the brooder
house out into an open field.
The young farmer lost 200
chickens along with the brooder,
but his parents. Mr. and Mrs.
William Stroble, replaced them.

A hoe with a brain was the latest
labor saving device offered to
farmers today.
David Packard, of Palo Alto,
former Stanford football player,
told the annual convention of
the American Institute of Elec
trical Engineers of a robot hoe
that thins out plants and weeds
as fast as 20 agricultural labor

The electronic device, he said,
has worked successfully In thin
ning sugar beet plants, and plans
are underway to try the machine
in cotton fields.
An electric "eye" operated by
light refractions from leaves of
plants and weeds, is adjusted so
that it selects for chopping off
plants at certain intervals or
plants which are out of align
ment in the rows, Packard ex

"One machine will cost less
than $5,000 and it should pay
for Itself In one season," Pack
ard said, revealing that a new
concern has been organized to
manufacture it.
